This work aims to evaluate the effect of inclusion of different contents of candeia (Eremanthus erythropappus) essential oil (whose alpha-bisabolol is the main terpene) on the properties of polylactic acid (PLA) nanostructured mats and their relationship with fiber morphology and structure. The interaction occurring between the PLA and the candeia essential oil was confirmed by thermal and microscopy analysis. Addition of candeia essential oil increased nanofiber diameter and decreased the glass transition and melting temperatures of the nanofibers, suggesting lower energy input for processing. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images provided evidence of a homogeneous structure for the nanostructured mats. X-ray diffraction did not show differences in the crystallization of the nanofibers. This ongoing research confirms the possibility of incorporation of candeia essential oil in the production of nanofibers that will be studied for multipurpose applications.
HYPSOMETRIC EQUATIONS FOR UNMANAGED Eucalyptus spp. IN OLD AGE WITH TECHNIQUES FOR THE INCLUSION OF COVARIATESABSTRACT: The aim of the study was to establish hypsometric equations for unmanaged Eucalyptus spp. in old age. For this purpose we measured the diameter and height of 513 stems distributed in 11 species and the hypsometric relationship was established by six regression models, being selected the one with the best Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), standard error of estimative (Syx), Maximum Likelihood Ratio Test and Residual Graphical Analysis. Subsequently, the best model has undergone the inclusion of the covariates stem quality (Qf) and Species (Sp) by means of the decomposition of its parameters. Under these conditions, the model of Chapman and Richards showed the best performance in both modeling approaches. When compared both models, we observed a reduction of 71 AIC units and 7.4% in Syx and a significant improvement in all aspects of the residual distribution in the model with covariates. The results show that it is possible to provide hypsometric equations suitable for unmanaged Eucalyptus in old age, with and without addition of covariates, and the last technique has provided significant improvement in the quality of fit of the models.
Eremanthus erythropappus, commonly known as candeia, is an income-generating tree native to Brazil. This is due to the high durability of its wood and its essential oil containing the active component alpha bisabolol. Despite this economic potential, until the early 2000's no studies existed to explore the sustainable management in areas in which the species naturally occurs or for establishing commercial plantations. This study proposes new management strategies based on an individual tree model, and evaluates the growth behavior of candeia trees planted in different spacing. The experiment was installed in March 2002, in Carrancas municipality, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The experimental area was divided into 4 blocks with 4 different spacings as treatments. The individual model used to propose the best management system uses development of crown area as a function of DBH. The results showed that candeia trees were sensitive to initial spacing variation. With increased initial spacing, candeia trees reached competition later, as demonstrated by crown area development. Thus, candeia trees planted at a wider spacing maintain a desirable growth rate without need for thinning for a longer time, compared to trees planted at narrower spacing. The fitted individual tree model presented in this study showed consistent results and flexibility, providing alternatives for different management strategies. The best growth response was obtained for planting densities greater than 3.75 m² per tree, which corresponds to a spacing of 1.5 x 2.5 m.Index terms: Crown area; stand density; monomolecular model; individual tree model.
