To increase the agronomic potential of the culture, knowledge aiming the increase of fruit quality is necessary. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical-chemical and pyhisical characteristics of dragon fruit during maturation, in order to define the best harvest point. Fresh weight, longitudinal and transverse diameter, skin color, flesh firmness, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, ratio and flesh pH were evaluated. A completely randomized design was carried out, represented by harvest time (days after anthesis). In each evaluation time, seven fruits were harvested, representing the replications, being one fruit per parcel. The averages of each evaluation time were subjected to polynomial evaluation, being selected according to the significance of F test and the coefficient of determination. The best dragon fruit harvest time was observed 41 days after anthesis. At this stage, fruits presented higher weight and higher red skin color intensity, lower flesh firmness, higher contents of total soluble solids and lower acidity.
Knowledge of the quality of fruits and the genetic variability among genotypes of acerola is important to optimize the use of genetic resources in improvement programs. The objective of the present study was to assess physico-chemical characteristics to determine genetic divergence among 24 genotypes of acerola. Sixty ripe fruits were collected per plant in a commercial orchard in the municipality of Jequitibá-MG. They were assessed in two production seasons with regard to their physical, chemical, and physico-chemical characteristics. Multivariate analysis of the genetic divergence among the genotypes was performed using principal component analysis, Tocher’s clustering method, and the nearest-neighbor hierarchical method, using the standardized mean Euclidean distance as the measure of dissimilarity. Genotypes 13, 20, and 23 exhibited means that were higher than the overall mean values for the main characteristics (fruit mass, ratio, and vitamin C content). Genotypes 3, 6, 8, 21, and 24 stood out with regard to fruit mass and ratio, i.e., they were larger and sweeter. Genotype 16 stood out with regard to fruit mass and vitamin C content. Results obtained using the methods were comparable, and the methods were effective in discriminating between the genotypes. This indicated variability, with potential for use in improvement programs. Based on the mean values for the chemical and physical characteristics of fruits and considering the genetic divergence among the genotypes, it was possible to suggested nine crosses to generate a future improved population, namely between genotype 11 and genotypes 3, 6, 8, 13, 16, 20, 21, 23, and 24.
-In recent years, with the change in consumer profile, the demand for foods with low levels or even without pesticides has increased. Bagging fruits in the field is considered one of the oldest and effective phytosanitary practices, being an alternative to chemical control. The aim of the present work was to test some types of packaging in the bagging of pitaia fruits during their development in the plant in order to maintain quality. Red pitaia plant fruits [Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Britton & Rose] five years post-planting were used. The experimental design used was random blocks, with 5 treatments, 4 repetitions and 10 fruits per plot. Treatments consisted of control (without bagging), newspaper bag, Kraft paper bag, waxed paper bag and Non-woven bag (NW). The following characteristics were evaluated: percentage of remaining fruits up to harvest; percentage of damaged fruits; fruit mass; longitudinal and transverse diameter; pulp yield; peel thickness; soluble solids content (SS); pH; titratable acidity (TA) and SS/TA ratio. There was no difference among treatments for most of the characteristics analyzed, except for percentage of remaining fruits on the plant and percentage of damaged fruits. Bagging does not alter the physical and chemical characteristics of red pitaia fruits. NW and newspaper bags are more effective in bagging pitaia fruits due to greater permanence in the fruit during its development in the plant. Index terms: Hylocereus undatus (Haw.)
ResumoA pitaia vermelha [Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Palavras-chave: Citrus reticulata Blanco, Lithothamnium, nutrientes AbstractThe present study was performed to evaluate the nutritional behavior, production and quality of fruits of 'Ponkan' mandarin trees using calcified seaweed. It was conducted in unirrigated orchard located in Perdões, the southern region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The 'Ponkan' mandarin used were grafted on 'Rangpur' lime, thirteen years old, cultivated with spacing of 6 m x 3 m. The experimental design was the randomized block design with split plot in time, with four rates of calcified seaweed (0.0, 0.3, 0.6 and 1.2 kg plant -1 ) in the plot, and the two years of assessment (2010 and 2011) in the subplot. At harvest, leaves samples were collected from productive branches for analysis of nutrients. Production, transverse diameter, longitudinal diameter, mass, titatrable acidity, soluble solids and soluble solids/ titatrable acidity ratio of fruits were evaluated. The application of calcified seaweed increased the leaf levels of N, P, Ca and Mg at harvest. The level of K in the leaves of 'Ponkan' mandarin trees at harvest decreased with the rates of calcified seaweed per plant. The calcified seaweed rate of 0.8 kg per plant favored the production and improved the quality of 'Ponkan' mandarin fruits.
