A criação do Ciência sem Fronteiras (CsF), programa federal que tinha por objetivo qualificar a ciência nacional por meio da mobilidade estudantil, trouxe à tona a baixa proficiência em língua estrangeira dos alunos brasileiros. Na tentativa de remediar a questão e direcionar os intercâmbios para universidades em países anglófonos - tidas como as melhores universidades do mundo - o governo federal criou o Inglês sem Fronteiras (IsF). Criado em 2012, o programa foi pensado a partir de três ações principais: aplicação de testes de proficiência para que os alunos tivessem conhecimento de sua proficiência na língua inglesa, oferecimento de cursos presenciais voltados aos mais proficientes e curso online voltado àqueles menos proficientes. Diante disto, o presente artigo traz os principais resultados de uma pesquisa que analisou a proposta e a dinâmica dos cursos propostos pelo IsF com o intuito de compreender como o programa se configurava. Por meio da aplicação de um questionário semiaberto (perguntas fechadas e abertas) sobre o funcionamento do programa, foi possível inferir como os cursos funcionam na prática e suas principais dificuldades diante do cenário de ensino de inglês no Brasil, assim como o lugar político-social em que o programa se inseriu em face dos desafios propostos pela agenda e interesses do CsF e pelos rumos da internacionalização da educação superior no mundo.
O presente artigo busca elencar as principais estratégias de internacionalização em voga atualmente e aquela desempenhada no Brasil por meio do programa Ciência sem Fronteiras (CsF). Através do levantamento bibliográfico e documental, investigamos as estratégias mais lucrativas e prestigiadas ao redor do mundo e como a iniciativa brasileira se configurou no cenário mundial. Observamos que nos moldes em que a internacionalização acontece hoje, o movimento favorece países ricos e do norte, garantindo poder econômico e político às principais universidades acolhedoras. No caso brasileiro, apesar de caro e pouco arquitetado com as principais demandas da pesquisa, o programa garantiu mobilidade estudantil e acesso ao ensino de línguas, possibilidades pouco promovidas ou mal desenvolvidas até então na história da educação superior brasileira.
