A computer-controlled compression testing machine is used t o compile a database of the static cushioning properties of package cushioning materials. Through research into automated data input procedures, so far not developed, a direct transfer program (ZABCON) has been devised, which allows direct access t o the disk in which compression test data are stored. Elimination of manual data input has led t o simplified and easy construction of a database, and the applied laboratory tests, such as that for determining the relationship between static cushioning properties and compression rate, can be performed quite readily. Also in this report, the application of the static cushioning characteristics of foamed polystyrene in the cushioning package design of dummy goods and the evaluation of its reliability by drop testing are discussed Keywords: Database; database system; personal computer; cushioning package design; static cushioning properties; foamed polystyrene; direct transfer programme; compression rate; drop test; dummy goodsThe authors have already reported' on the building of a database of the static cushioning properties of package cushioning materials, such as foamed polyethylene, foamed polypropylene and foamed polyethylene-polystyrene, by use of a computercontrolled compression testing machine. In that work, however, too much time was spent on the initial programming (BASIC) of the database, so that many problems with the processing program of the database were left unresolved and experiments could not be conducted fully to evaluate reliability and other important static cushioning properties. The problems remaining fall into two categories: This paper reports on a study for (i)(a) and the experiments conducted to evaluate the static cushioning properties of foamed polystyrene for (ii)(a) and (ii)(b).(ii) Static cushioning properties: (a)
In the previous papers, the analysis and the experiment were conducted on the vibration of the package with gaps . As a result , it has been clarified that the vibration ofthe contents
