Introdução: O trabalho voluntário é aquele em que a pessoa se dedica a uma forma de atividade que proporcione para outras pessoas um bem estar social. Através desta prática pode-se ver o princípio da beneficência sendo posto em prática, uma vez que se age em prol do interesse do paciente, associando-se a benevolência. Objetivos: Identificar os trabalhos científicos relacionados com o trabalho voluntário e os idosos no site Scielo. Método: Pesquisa dos artigos científicos publicados no site Scielo, com o vocábulo "voluntariado". Desses artigos, foram selecionados os que eram relacionados com os idosos. Resultados e Discussão: Foram encontrados 55 artigos no site Scielo. Desses, apenas três eram referentes aos idosos e o voluntariado. As três investigações encontradas foram: a) Pesquisa qualitativa, sobre o fortalecimento do declínio do vínculo do voluntariado com os idosos; b) Auto-relato com 155 idosos. Este trabalho visava identificar a relação das variáveis sócio-demográficas, saúde e atividades. Foi observado que as mulheres eram mais voltadas ao voluntariado assim como os fatores renda e a escolaridade altas também influenciavam para esta prática; c) Foi apresentado o trabalho voluntário como alternativa para promoção da saúde. Esta investigação mostrava uma relação entre o trabalho voluntário e a satisfação com a vida. Considerações finais: Dessa forma, é possível perceber que poucos estudos são feitos sobre o voluntariado e a sua atuação junto ao idoso. Apesar de serem apenas três os artigos encontrados, se pode verificar o princípio da beneficência através do voluntariado, ao ser destacado seus benefícios para a saúde do indivíduo.
