The aim of this study was to study the effect of vitamin "E" in the treatment of oral mucositis. 80 patients with oral mucositis were randomly distributed into 2 groups: group A, topically applied vitamin "E" and group B, vitamin "E" was given systemically. The 2 groups were evaluated for 5 days. Results showed that in group A grades of oral mucositis improved significantly, while in group B no significant improvement was noticed. It is concluded that topical application of 100 mg vitamin "E" twice daily is an effective measure for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis.
The aim of this study was to assess the early oral complications in pediatric patients receiving chemotherapy. An interview and oral examination was conducted on 150 pediatric cancer patients receiving standard dose chemotherapy. Results showed that oral pain and dry mouth were the most frequent patients' complaints. The prevalences of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis and oral infections were relatively high. The chemotherapeutic antimetabolites were the most frequently associated with oral complications than other types of chemotherapy. The present results indicate that the oral complications among patients receiving chemotherapy are common
INTRODUCTION: Diabetes and its acute complications have become a significant health hazard worldwide. To date, there are no data on the awareness of dental professionals regarding the management of diabetic patients. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and reported practices of Ministry of Health dentists (MOH) regarding the oral complications associated with Diabetes Mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a cross sectional descriptive survey of a sample of dentists working in the Egyptian Ministry of Health facilities, in Alexandria. The 349 participants were asked to complete a comprehensive, close-ended questionnaire, to assess the knowledge, attitude, and reported practices regarding diabetic patients. The first section was concerned with the demographic variables of the participating dentists. The second and third sections enquired about the participants' knowledge and attitudes regarding diabetic symptoms, while the forth section of the questionnaire assessed the respondents' reported practices concerning diabetic patients and actions taken toward the disease. RESULTS: Dentists participated in the study (n= 349 from 400 with a response rate of 87.25%) showed that Ministry of Health dentists had a good knowledge and favorable attitude toward diabetic patients visiting the Ministry of Health clinics, however, they had inadequate reported practices toward the same issue. CONCLUSIONS: THE present study showed relatively high level of awareness of dental practitioners regarding diabetes. Therefore, designing appropriate training programs for oral health care providers in order to enhance their practices towards the diagnosis and management of oral complications of Diabetes is mandatory.
INTRODUCTION:Emotional intelligence (EI) was reported to help in coping with stress, managing patients, improving doctor-patient relationship and trust; moreover, it leads to more successful career performance of dental students and professionals. OBJECTIVES: To assess the EI levels of the dental interns according to socio-demographic and personal characteristics, and to some study related variables such as, reason for choosing dentistry, satisfaction with career choice and desire to enroll in a dental postgraduate sub-specialty program. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was cross-sectional; it involved all Egyptian dental interns, graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University, and enrolled in the internship program in the year of 2014-2015. Emotional Intelligence was assessed using the Genos, 31-item, self-reported, questionnaire, rated on a 5-point Likert scale, measuring EI across a seven subscale model and its relation to the different variables. All ethical and administrative approvals and permissions were obtained. RESULTS: A total of 267 (157 females, 110 males) interns participated in the study, with response rate of 76.72%. Most of the respondents (84.3%) showed high EI, while 15.7% showed average EI, and none showed low EI. The highest scores were observed in 'emotional awareness of others' (mean%=71.2), and the least in 'emotional self-control' (mean%=64.5). Significantly higher EI (p<0.005) was detected in those who were males, single, chose dentistry as their own desire, were satisfied with choosing dentistry, and wanted to enroll in a postgraduate dental sub-specialty program. No significant differences were found regarding age, areas of residency, rate of internet use, type of parental education or job. CONCLUSIONS: Fresh dental graduates from Alexandria Dental University have reported high overall EI levels, which were significantly associated with gender, marital status and study related variables, more studies are needed to find the role of EI in dental student's academic and clinical performance.
