Objective The purpose of this study was to analyze computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) images and to evaluate the maximum standardized uptake value (SUV max) of positron emission tomography (PET)/CT parameters between sinonasal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), knowing the imaging features that distinguish sinonasal NHL from SCC. Study Design Case series with chart review. Setting University tertiary care facility. Subjects and Methods We analyzed the features on CT, MR imaging, and PET/CT of 78 patients diagnosed with sinonasal NHL or SCC histopathologically. The CT (n = 34), MRI (n = 25), and PET/CT (n = 33) images of 39 patients with sinonasal NHL and the CT (n = 38), MR (n = 28), and PET/CT (n = 31) images of 39 patients with SCC were evaluated. The sinonasal NHL was diagnosed as natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (n = 28) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (n = 11). Results Patients with sinonasal NHL had a larger tumor volume and higher tumor homogeneity than patients with SCC on T2-weighted and postcontrast MR images. Most of the sinonasal NHL and SCC showed a high degree of enhancement. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values and adjacent bone destruction were significantly lower in sinonasal NHL than in SCC. However, cervical lymphadenopathy, Waldeyer's ring involvement, and PET/CT SUV max showed no significant differences between sinonasal NHL and SCC. Conclusion CT and MR images of sinonasal masses showing a bulky lesion, marked homogeneity, and low ADC values without adjacent bone destruction are more suggestive of sinonasal NHL than SCC.
BackgroundAlthough indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO)-mediated immune suppression of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has been revealed in septic and tumor microenvironments, the role of IDO in suppressing allergic airway inflammation by MSCs is not well documented. We evaluated the effects of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) on allergic inflammation in IDO-knockout (KO) asthmatic mice or asthmatic mice treated with ASCs derived from IDO-KO mice.Methods and FindingsASCs were injected intravenously in wild-type (WT) and IDO-KO asthmatic mice. Furthermore, asthmatic mice were injected with ASCs derived from IDO-KO mice. We investigated the immunomodulatory effects of ASCs between WT and IDO-KO mice or IDO-KO ASCs in asthmatic mice. In asthmatic mice, ASCs significantly reduced airway hyperresponsiveness, the number of total inflammatory cells and eosinophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), eosinophilic inflammation, goblet hyperplasia, and serum concentrations of total and allergen-specific IgE and IgG1. ASCs significantly inhibited Th2 cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, and IL-13, and enhanced Th1 cytokine (interferon-γ) and regulatory cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β) in BALF and lung draining lymph nodes (LLNs). ASCs led to significant increases in regulatory T-cells (Tregs) and IL-10+ T cell populations in LLNs. However, the immunosuppressive effects of ASCs did not significantly differ between WT and IDO-KO mice. Moreover, ASCs derived from IDO-KO mice showed immunosuppressive effects in allergic airway inflammation.ConclusionsIDO did not play a pivotal role in the suppression of allergic airway inflammation through ASCs, suggesting that it is not the major regulator responsible for suppressing allergic airway inflammation.
Objective: Correction of the caudal septum deviation is the most difficult part of the septoplasty and a common cause of revision septoplasty. The purpose of this study was to present authors' preliminary results in the treatment of patients with caudal septal deviation using the septal cartilage traction suture technique. Study Design: Prospective, single center, observational study. Materials and Methods: Sixty-seven patients with a caudal septal deviation underwent septal cartilage traction suture technique with endonasal septoplasty. After removal of excessive caudal cartilage, the caudal L-strut was sutured at two or more points using 5-0 Vicryl on the modified Killian incision site. Subjective outcomes using visual analog scales (VAS) and Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale, objective endoscopic examination, and acoustic rhinometry data were assessed. Results: There was significant symptomatic improvement in the VAS and NOSE scale at 1, 3, and 6 months postsurgery. Complete correction in the endoscopy was observed in the 91.0% of patients at 3 months postsurgery. The results of acoustic rhinometry increased from 0.3 and 4.3 preoperatively to 0.7 and 7.7 at 3 months postoperatively. Furthermore, no patient experienced septal hematoma, septal perforation, and loss of nasal tip support at 6 months follow-up. Conclusions: The septal cartilage traction suture technique obtained significant improvement in subjective and objective outcomes in patients with caudal septal deviation. This technique is a simple, safe, and effective method to treat caudal septal deviation.
