DNA of periodontopathogens can be found in synovial fluid and oral bacteria may play a role in the pathogenesis of arthritis.

The haplotype ATA, which is known as a 'low interleukin-10 producer' is a putative risk indicator for generalized aggressive periodontitis.

The data of our study do not suggest any contribution of HSV-1, EBV or HCMV to aggressive periodontitis in a German population. Ethnic and methodological aspects might have caused conflicting results of previous studies.

HLA-A9 and -B15 seem to represent susceptibility factors for AP whereas HLA-A2 and -B5 are potential protective factors against periodontitis among Caucasians.
