The aim of this study was to investigate the flow fields of blood flowing through the curved bileaflet mechanical heart valve. A numerical analysis was carried out with the fluid-structure interaction between the blood flow and the motion of leaflets in two different types of blood vessels (type A, with sinus blood vessel, and type B, without sinus blood vessel). When the leaflet was fully opened, a fluttering phenomenon was detected in association with the blood flow, and recirculation flows were observed in the sinus region of the blood vessel for type A. During the closing phase, regurgitation was formed between the ring and the edge of the each leaflet for both types. When the leaflet came into contact with the valve ring at the end of the closing phase, rebound of the leaflet occurred. In consideration of the entire domain, the pressure drop occurs mainly in the valve region. The present results showed tendencies similar to those obtained by previous experiments for blood flow and contribute to the development of the curved bileaflet mechanical heart valve prostheses.
Freeform mirrors can be readily fabricated by a single point diamond turning (SPDT) machine. However, this machining process often leaves mid-frequency errors (MFEs) that generate undesirable diffraction effects and stray light. In this work, we propose a novel thin electroless nickel plating procedure to remove MFE on freeform surfaces. The proposed procedure has a distinct advantage over a typical thick plating method in that the machining process can be endlessly repeated until the designed mirror surface is obtained. This is of great importance because the sophisticated surface of a freeform mirror cannot be optimized by a typical SPDT machining process, which can be repeated only several times before the limited thickness of the nickel plating is consumed. We will also describe the baking process of a plated mirror to improve the hardness of the mirror surface, which is crucial for minimizing the degradation of that mirror surface that occurs during the polishing process. During the whole proposed process, the changes in surface figures and textures are monitored and cross checked by two different types of measurements, as well as by an interference pattern test. The experimental results indicate that the proposed thin electroless nickel plating procedure is very simple but powerful for removing MFEs on freeform mirror surfaces.
A flexible disk grinding process model was developed based on the dynamic relationship proposed by Kurfess and the influence of the major system parameters which potentially affect the grinding process was studied. Due to the process complexities, several new parameters were assumed to be kinematically dependent on the geometric layouts of the process. Different process stages had been defined depending on the kinematic relationships between the grinding disk and workpiece. A trend of depth of cut was simulated using the proposed model and compared with the empirically measured data in two dimensions. Due to a poor prediction capability of the first model, a modified model was proposed and a better performance has been proved to reveal a closer description of processed surface quality. Also a deflection length has been verified using a different analytical approach.
When a mechanical structure is driven by stationary wide band random point forces, the resulting vibration depends upon the number, location, and joint statistical properties of the exciting forces. In this study, under the assumption of light damping, an approximate procedure for analyzing plates is briefly outlined. The effects of number, location and correlation of the force field on the vibration level are then investigated for various cases in which random point forces with band limited white noise are applied, and the optimal spacing between input forces that produces a relative minimum in the vibration response is predicted.
