İnsanlığı büyük yıkımlara sürükleyen salgın hastalıklar, kimi zaman tarihinde seyrini değiştirmiştir. Bu salgınlardan biri olan Frengi hastalığı var olduğu andan itibaren toplumları hem fiziksel hem de ruhsal olarak sarsan sinsi bir hastalık olarak karşımıza çıkmıştır. 1492 yıllında Amerika Kıtasının keşfinden sonra hızla yayılmaya başlayan frengi, önce Avrupa’yı daha sonra ise tüm dünyayı etkisi altına almıştır. Elbetteki Osmanlı coğrafyasında da Frengi yaygın bir şekilde görülen hastalıklardan birisidir. Özellikle 19. yüzyılın başlarından itibaren bir yandan açlık, beslenme sorunu, yoksulluk, savaş, doğal afetler yaşanırken öte yandan meydana gelen frengi salgını Anadolu insanının en büyük kâbuslarından birisi olmuştur. Bu çalışmada Frengi hastalığının, döneme şahitlik etmiş kişilerin gözünden bakmaya çalışılacaktır.
