La biodiversidad ha sido fuente de innumerables servicios para las sociedades desde el comienzo de los tiempos, por tanto, los ecosistemas juegan un papel decisivo en el aprovisionamiento de bienes y servicios necesarios para mantener la vida humana y animal, los cuales de manera permanente se ven sometidos a cambios principalmente de fuente antrópica que son justificados para adaptarlos a una mayor prestación de estos servicios, siendo definidos como la capacidad de los ecosistemas para proporcionar productos y/o servicios al hombre entre los que se pueden encontrar una amplia gama.
Las funciones del suelo dependen de una serie de propiedades físicas químicas y biológicas, que combinadas determinan las cualidades esenciales del suelo. Estas cualidades a su vez garantizan que el suelo pueda cumplir sus roles ecológicos y productivos, y en consecuencia beneficiar la preservación de la vida en el planeta (Brammer & Nachtergaele, 2015); por lo tanto, el uso y manejo sustentable del suelo permite convivir en conexión con sus atributos y disfrutar de forma armónica de sus vitales servicios. Contrario a lo deseable, el suelo ha sufrido una alteración antrópica desmedida sin considerar las consecuencias. Estudios a nivel global han identificado que los cambios en el uso de la tierra durante los últimos 50 años por áreas para la agricultura y la ganadería, han generado alteraciones en la abundancia, composición y actividad de las comunidades microbianas, afectando la disponibilidad de nutrientes del suelo y la productividad de las plantas, además de deteriorar el ambiente y disminuir la calidad de vida de las personas (Soka & Ritchie, 2014; Ruiz et al., 2015). El Aguacate (Persea americana Miller) es uno de los frutos de mayor consumo mundial. México es el principal productor y actualmente afronta problemas como el ataque de patógenos a la raíz y recientemente se han registrado impactos en la salud humana por uso de agroquímicos. Una alternativa para afrontar problemáticas en el desarrollo de las plantas ha sido iniciar el correcto manejo de las primeras etapas de producción y con ello mitigar problemas posteriores, en este manejo los microorganismos juegan un papel fundamental. Uno de los métodos es la inoculación con microorganismos del suelo como los hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA); diversos estudios han demostrado que su colonización radicular en las plantas contribuye con la absorción de agua y nutrientes; lo cual indica que su potencialización puede contribuir en el manejo sustentable de los cultivos y como opción para fortalecer la producción. Colombia ocupa el quinto lugar en productividad a nivel mundial y lo que más resta competitividad local es el costo de los agroinsumos; en este sentido se podrían fortalecer investigaciones encaminadas a la bioprospección de HMA específicos para diversas variedades de aguacate en las regiones colombianas, ya que son poco los avances en esta temática. Avanzar tecnológicamente en el manejo de cultivos y generar estrategias sostenibles hace parte de las perspectivas y retos de la cadena del aguacate en Colombia. Adicionalmente es prioritario entrar en la dinámica de la demanda mundial con preferencia de alimentos más sanos y cuya producción sea amigable con el medio ambiente.
<p>El nitrógeno (N) es el nutriente más importante en términos de consumo de fertilizantes. La excesiva adición de N a través de fertilizantes y sus efectos nocivos en el ambiente es preocupación de científicos, ambientalistas, gobiernos, industria y cuerpos internacionales. El fortalecimiento en investigación y aprovechamiento de la fijación biológica de nitrógeno (FBN) gana espacio como alternativa de agricultura sustentable a nivel global. En esta investigación se encontró que la interacción de bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno (diazotróficas) con diversos cultivos ha sido tema de investigación a nivel mundial, debido al potencial biotecnológico evidenciado en el aumento de la productividad y posibilidad de reducción en costos tanto de producción como ambientales. En Colombia poco uso se hace de biofertilizantes nitrogenados, de acuerdo al DANE, 80% de agricultores usan fertilizantes de síntesis química, principalmente urea. Brasil, gran consumidor de este fertilizante y de alta producción agrícola, hace grandes esfuerzos de inversión en ciencia y tecnología enfocados hacia la producción de biofertilizantes nitrogenados, logrando significativa disminución en costos de producción principalmente en soya, donde el ahorro de fertilizantes de síntesis química ha sido del orden de 10.3 billones de dólares anuales (EMBRAPA Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária). Este centro investigativo plantea intensificar la investigación científica para en 2020 suministrar biofertilizantes que reduzcan los niveles de fertilizantes de síntesis química. Se concluye que este camino podría iniciarse en Colombia como una posibilidad para el crecimiento sustentable del agro, contextualizado en cultivos de interés para la economía colombiana.</p>
