<p>Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are a recent addition to the range of online learning options. Since 2008, MOOCs have been run by a variety of public and elite universities, especially in North America. Many academics have taken interest in MOOCs recognising the potential to deliver education around the globe on an unprecedented scale; some of these academics are taking a research-oriented perspective and academic papers describing their research are starting to appear in the traditional media of peer reviewed publications. This paper presents a systematic review of the published MOOC literature (2008-2012): Forty-five peer reviewed papers are identified through journals, database searches, searching the Web, and chaining from known sources to form the base for this review. We believe this is the first effort to systematically review literature relating to MOOCs, a fairly recent but massively popular phenomenon with a global reach. The review categorises the literature into eight different areas of interest, introductory, concept, case studies, educational theory, technology, participant focussed, provider focussed, and other, while also providing quantitative analysis of publications according to publication type, year of publication, and contributors. Future research directions guided by gaps in the literature are explored.</p>
To determine if megakaryocytes are targeted by immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) autoantibodies, as are platelets, we have studied the effects of ITP plasma on in vitro megakaryocytopoiesis. Umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells were incubated in the presence of thrombopoietin and 10% plasma from either ITP patients (n ؍ 53) or healthy donors. The yield of megakaryocytic cells, as determined by flow cytometry, was significantly reduced in the presence of ITP plasma containing antiplatelet glycoprotein Ib (GPIb) autoantibodies (P < .001) as compared with both the control and patient plasma with no detectable antiGPIIb/IIIa or anti-GPIb autoantibodies. Platelet absorption of anti-GPIb autoantibodies in ITP plasmas resulted in double the megakaryocyte production of the same plasmas without absorption, whereas platelet absorption of control plasma had no effect on megakaryocyte yield. Furthermore, 2 human monoclonal autoantibodies isolated from ITP patients, 2E7, specific for human platelet glycoprotein IIb heavy chain, and 5E5, specific for a neoantigen on glycoprotein IIIa expressed on activated platelets, had significant inhibitory effects on in vitro megakaryocytopoiesis (P < .001). Taken together, these data indicate that autoantibodies against either platelet GPIb or platelet GPIIb/IIIa in ITP plasma not only are involved in platelet destruction, but may also contribute to the inhibition of platelet production. BackgroundMassive open online courses (MOOCs) have become immensely popular in a short span of time. However, there is very little research exploring MOOCs in the discipline of health and medicine.ObjectiveWe aim to provide a review of MOOCs related to health and medicine offered by various MOOC platforms in 2013, by analyzing and comparing the various offerings, their target audience, typical length of course, and credentials offered. We also discuss opportunities and challenges presented by MOOCs in health and medicine.MethodsHealth and medicine–related MOOCs were gathered using several methods to ensure the richness and completeness of data. Identified MOOC platform websites were used to gather the lists of offerings. In parallel, these MOOC platforms were contacted to access official data on their offerings. Two MOOC aggregator sites (Class Central and MOOC List) were also consulted to gather data on MOOC offerings. Eligibility criteria were defined to concentrate on the courses that were offered in 2013 and primarily on the subject of health and medicine. All language translations in this paper were done using Google Translate.ResultsThe search identified 225 courses, of which 98 were eligible for the review. Over half (58%, 57/98) of the MOOCs considered were offered on the Coursera platform, and 94% (92/98) of all the MOOCs were offered in English. Universities offered 90 MOOCs, and the John Hopkins University offered the largest number of MOOCs (12/90). Only three MOOCs were offered by developing countries (China, West Indies, and Saudi Arabia). The duration of MOOCs varied from 3-20 weeks with an average length of 6.7 weeks. On average, MOOCs expected a participant to work on the material for 4.2 hours a week. Verified certificates were offered by 14 MOOCs, while three others offered other professional recognition.ConclusionsThe review presents evidence to suggest that MOOCs can be used as a way to provide continuous medical education. It also shows the potential of MOOCs as a means of increasing health literacy among the public.

What people study when they study Twitter Classifying Twitter related academic papers Structured Abstract PurposeSince its introduction in 2006, messages posted to the microblogging system Twitter have provided a rich dataset for researchers, leading to the publication of over a thousand academic papers. This paper aims to identify this published work and to classify it in order to understand Twitter based research. Design/methodology/approachFirstly the papers on Twitter were identified. Secondly, following a review of the literature, a classification of the dimensions of microblogging research was established. Thirdly, papers were qualitatively classified using open coded content analysis, based on the paper's title and abstract, in order to analyze method, subject, and approach. FindingsThe majority of published work relating to Twitter concentrates on aspects of the messages sent and details of the users. A variety of methodological approaches are used across a range of identified domains. Research LimitationsThis work reviewed the abstracts of all papers available via database search on the term "Twitter" and this has two major implications: 1) the full papers are not considered and so works may be misclassified if their abstract is not clear, 2) publications not indexed by the databases, such as book chapters, are not included. The study is focussed on microblogging, the applicability of the approach to other media is not considered. Originality/valueTo date there has not been an overarching study to look at the methods and purpose of those using Twitter as a research subject. Our major contribution is to scope out papers published on Twitter until the close of 2011. The classification derived here will provide a framework within which researchers studying Twitter related topics will be able to position and ground their work.
The microvascular response of foot skin to minor thermal injury and the skin of the anterior abdominal wall to injury from a needle was assessed by laser Doppler flowmetry in 23 patients with type I diabetes and 21 healthy control subjects. After minor thermal injury mean (SD) maximum skin blood flow was significantly lower in the diabetic group than the control group (0.53 (0-11) v 0-72 (0.10) V, in arbitrary units of flow, respectively, p<0001) and was negatively correlated with the duration of diabetes (r= -0-60; p<0-01). After needle injury a similar pattern of impairment was seen, the peak flow value recorded being significantly lower in the diabetic group than the control group (0.28 (0-10) v 0-41 (0-09) V, respectively; p<0-001) and also negatively correlated with the duration of diabetes (r=-0-61; p<0-01). There was a significant relation between the response obtained at the two sites of injury in the diabetic group (r= + 0-72, p<0O001) but not in the control group. The impairment in response was not related to diabetic control and was not explicable in terms of a reduction in superficial skin capillary density.
