Postnatal rearing conditions influence the development of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) responses to stress in the rat. Thus, postnatal handling dampens HPA responsivity to stress, while prolonged periods of maternal separation have the opposite effect. HPA responses to stress are initiated by the release of corticotropin-releasing factor and/or arginine vasopressin from the neurones of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVNh). A major source of input to the PVNh arises from brainstem noradrenergic neurones with signalling occurring via alpha1 adrenoreceptors. We examined the noradrenergic response to stress in the PVNh in adult animals exposed to daily periods of handling or maternal separation over the first 2 weeks of life using microdialysis in conscious animals. Maternal separation increased, while handling greatly decreased and norepinepherine responses to restraint stress in the PVNh as compared to non-handled controls; the same pattern was observed for plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) responses to stress. Rearing condition did not affect either alpha1 or alpha2 receptor levels in the PVNh. However, alpha2 receptor binding levels in the noradrenergic cell body regions of the locus coeruleus and the n. tractus solitarius were significantly increased in handled animals. These alpha2 receptors are principally located on noradrenergic neurones (i.e. autoreceptors) and inhibit noradrenaline release at terminal sites. The effects on alpha2 receptor levels could serve as a mechanism for the differences in stress-induced noradrenaline levels in the PVNh and in HPA activity among handled vs non-handled and maternal separation animals. Thus, early life events may serve to influence the differentiation of noradrenergic neurones and thus alter HPA responses stress in adulthood.
India is currently undergoing rapid economic, demographic, and lifestyle transformations. A key feature of the latter transformation has been inappropriate and inadequate diets and decreases in physical activity. Data from various parts of India have shown a steady increase in the prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the metabolic syndrome, hypertension, coronary heart disease (CHD), etc., frequently in association with overweight or obesity. Comparative data show that Asian Indians are more sedentary than white Caucasians. In this review, the Consensus Group considered the available physical activity guidelines from international and Indian studies and formulated India-specific guidelines. A total of 60 min of physical activity is recommended every day for healthy Asian Indians in view of the high predisposition to develop T2DM and CHD. This should include at least 30 min of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, 15 min of work-related activity, and 15 min of muscle-strengthening exercises. For children, moderate-intensity physical activity for 60 min daily should be in the form of sport and physical activity. This consensus statement also includes physical activity guidelines for pregnant women, the elderly, and those suffering from obesity, T2DM, CHD, etc. Proper application of guidelines is likely to have a significant impact on the prevalence and management of obesity, the metabolic syndrome, T2DM, and CHD in Asian Indians.
The present investigation was carried out in the plain areas of Chitwan to determine the promising plant growth regulators (PGR) promoting growth and yield of chilli cultivars Jwala and Suryamukhi during wintersummer season of 2003/2004. Suryamukhi ranked superior to Jwala for most of the yield attributing characters, whereas Jwala was better in vegetative characters than Suryamukhi. Among PGRs, 2,4-D at 2 ppm was better for fruit set, number of fruits per plant, fruit length, number of seeds per fruit, seed weight per fruits, 1000 seed weight and fruit yield where as NAA at 40 ppm gave the highest leaf area index (LAI). PGRs were ineffective in promoting flowering and fruiting during winter season. GA 3 at 10 ppm exhibited maximum amount of ascorbic acid content. The treatments, 2 ppm 2,4-D, 5 ppm triacontanol, 40 ppm NAA and 10 ppm GA 3 produced 28.75%, 25.70%, 13.61% and 2.30% higher fruit yield over control, respectively. The highest net profit and B:C ratio were recorded in case of 2 ppm 2,4-D. The use of GA 3 as foliar spray was not economical.
Switzerland has the lowest adolescent fertility rate in Western Europe. According to data collected in 1993 as part of the Swiss Multicentre Adolescent Survey on Health, 5% of 1,726 sexually active adolescents in a group of 3,993 15-20-year-old women enrolled in academic or vocational classes had ever been pregnant; most of these women (80%) had terminated their pregnancy. Adolescents who had ever been pregnant did not differ significantly from those who had not by demographic characteristics. Multiple logistic regression analysis identified seven factors associated with pregnancy: having had four or more sexual partners; not having used contraceptives at first intercourse; ever use of less-effective contraceptive methods; having used illicit drugs during the last 30 days; living apart from one's parents; recently experiencing stress; and perceiving a lack of future prospects.
