BackgroundThe aim of this study was to investigate the association between A, B, O, Rhesus (Rh)-positive and Rh-negative blood groups and breast cancer in a nationwide cohort of 3,944 patients in Turkey.Material/MethodsA retrospective study included 3,944 patients diagnosed with breast cancer between 2004 and 2015 and with known blood type. Clinical and demographic patient data included age, sex, body mass index (BMI), menopausal status. The breast tumor type, size, grade, TNM stage, and the presence of lymph node and distant metastases were noted. Histopathology of the breast tumors had included routine detection of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and estrogen receptor (ER) levels.ResultsThe 3,944 patients with breast cancer were blood group, type A, B, O, and Rh-positive or Rh-negative; the median age was 47.9 years (range, 18.2–89.6 years); 99.5% (3923/3,844) were women, and 0.5% (21/3944) were men. Patients with blood type 0 had a significantly smaller tumor size compared with patients with blood types A or B. There were no significant differences between blood groups and patient age, BMI, menopausal status, tumor histology, ER status, HER2 status, lymph node and distant metastasis. However, there was a significant difference in the prevalence of lobular breast cancer, levels of ER-positive tumor cells, and prevalence of cases with tumor metastases in Rh-positive patients compared with Rh-negative patients.ConclusionsThe findings of this retrospective study showed that the type, grade, stage, and hormonal status of breast cancer showed no significant associations with ABO blood grouping.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, and obesity is a causative factor via estrogen exposure. Chemerin is a novel adipokine associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and polycystic ovary syndrome. We aimed to investigate serum chemerin levels in breast cancer and to correlate chemerin levels with clinicopathologic parameters of patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer. A total of 117 patients were enrolled the study. Serum chemerin levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Ethical approval and informed consents were attained. Thirty-seven of the study population was metastatic and 80 were non-metastatic at the time of diagnosis. The mean chemerin levels were 257.3 ± 68.7 ng/mL (148.1-526.0 ng/mL). Serum chemerin levels were significantly higher in post-menopausal women and patients with diabetes, hypertension, body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m 2 and age ≥50 years. Chemerin levels were not different in either group (p= 0.435). Multivariate analyses of parameters showed that CA15.3 and CEA levels were associated with metastatic disease. Our results propose that serum chemerin levels are not associated with breast cancer stage. However, further studies need to evaluate its role in carcinogenesis.

Background/aim: The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) and predictive factors for central lymph node metastasis (CLNM). Materials and methods:Patients diagnosed as having PTC and PTMC were evaluated. Clinical and laboratory parameters were recorded. Results:The mean age at diagnosis was 47.3 ± 11.9 years. Of all 223 patients, 91 (40.8%) had lymph nodes removed, 29 of whom had lymph node metastasis and 24 of whom had only CLNM. Univariate analysis revealed that central lymph node metastasis was associated with male sex, presence of bilaterality, presence of extrathyroidal extension, and tumor size (P = 0.033, P = 0.027, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). However, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that sex, age, tumor size, multifocality, bilaterality, extrathyroidal extension, clinical suspicion, and chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis were not significantly correlated with an increased risk for CLNM. Conclusion:Lymph node metastasis is known to be a significant predictor of locoregional recurrence in patients with PTC and PTMC. Further prospective studies are needed to identify the extent of surgery such as central lymph node dissection in patients with PTC or PTMC.
