En los últimos años, el tratamiento convencional y las técnicas tradicionales están viéndose complementados (que no sustituidos) por otro tipo de intervenciones más novedosas y alternativas que permiten, a través de equipos multidisciplinares, ampliar las áreas de actuación así como ofrecer otras técnicas que permitan alcanzar de forma eficaz los mismos o nuevos objetivos. En este artículo proponemos una intervención de Terapia Asistida con perros para personas con esquizofrenia, adecuándose a los objetivos propios de un Centro de Rehabilitación Psicosocial: mejorar la calidad de vida, el funcionamiento psicosocial y la integración comunitaria. Con ello, pretendemos estudiar la eficacia de la Terapia Asistida con Animales, como terapia alternativa y complementaria, en el proceso rehabilitador de diferentes recursos del área de salud mental. Para contextualizar esta intervención hacemos previamente un recorrido histórico de la Terapia Asistida con Animales y su campo de aplicación. La complejidad de la esquizofrenia permite abordar la enfermedad desde diferentes perspectivas. Así pues, es conveniente ampliar las líneas de actuación y estudiar nuevas técnicas dirigidas a mejorar los síntomas de la enfermedad y la calidad de vida de las personas que la sufren, siempre que dichas técnicas sean eficaces y efectivas dentro del tratamiento actual.
