A new bryozoan genus, Hesychoxenia (type species Membranipora praelonga MacGillivray), and subfamily, Hesychoxeniinae, are established for a South Australian species of bryozoan that colonizes leaves of Posidonia australis. Although highly aberrant it is allied with the Thalamoporellidae by the presence of calcareous spicules and a weak cryptocyst. Among other features, unique in the order Cheilostomida, are a kenozooidal post-ancestrular common bud, the presence of well-developed parietal muscles in spiculate kenozooids, multiple polypide buds in differentiating autozooids, and free intracoelomic colonies of microorganisms.
