4-Alkoxy-2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)thietanes, 3 (R=Me and Et), were prepared by the reactions of 2,2,4,4-tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)-1,-dithietane with alkyl vinyl ethers in a KF–DMF system. A bimolecular condensation product, bis[4,4-bis(trifluoromethyl)thietan-2-yl]ether, 5, was obtained by the treatment of 3 with concentrated sulfuric acid. On the other hand, when treated with sulfur in DMF in the presence of diethylamine, 3 gave 5-alkoxy-3,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,2-dithiolanes, 8, in rather good yields. Several reactions of these thietanes and 1,2-dithiolanes, including those with butyllithium, were examined.
A crystalline monolayer was observed at the subphase temperature Tsp below the melting point Tm of monolayers, while an amorphous monolayer was observed at Tsp above Tm of the monolayer, irrespective of the magnitude of surface pressure. A π-A isotherm depends on the phase of a monolayer; a plateau on the π-A isotherm (coexistence of solid and liquid phases) was observed for an amorphous monolayer and also, no plateau on the π-A isotherm (coexistence of solid and gas phases) for a crystalline monolayer. The phase transition from an amorphous to a crystalline state was not detected during compressing a monolayer.
Defect-diminished fatty acid monolayer was constructed by cooling the amorphous monolayer on the water surface down to a temperature region below the melting temperature of the monolayer.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
