Mathematics anxiety impacts to the learner tremendously especially his scholastic performance, mastery of learning competencies and skills, and even the career choice. This study investigated the different factors causing mathematics anxiety in Calculus of senior high school students. The research design employed was mixed method. Qualitative techniques were used in determining the factors that caused the anxiety of the participants and descriptive design in determining the anxiety level of the students. The study was conducted in five (5) senior high schools offering Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Strand in a province in the Southern Luzon, Philippines. Sixty- nine(69) participants took the Mathematic Anxiety Inventory (MAI) developed by Plake and Parker. The results revealed that almost all of the participants have either high or moderate mathematics anxiety level. The paper concludes that the abstract mathematical concepts of Calculus, the teaching style and attitude of the teacher, and the poor comprehension and analytical skills of the students were the major factors that caused the mathematics anxiety of the participants.
Vertical coherence of the content topics coupled with careful sequencing of learning competencies considering student’s cognitive level of development has been identified as an excellent characteristic of a well-planned spiral progression approach of the curriculum. This descriptive-evaluative method of study tailored with the Discrepancy Evaluation Model (DEM) as a framework of analysis explored the Philippine Kindergarten to Grade 10 (Kto10) mathematics curriculum guide (CG) to determine the program strengths and areas that need improvement. The qualitative approach to the analysis of CG is supported by the feedbacks and experiences of 16 teacher-informants (3Male, 13Female). The curriculum mapping revealed that content topics were arranged in increasing complexity (though there were observed discontinuity) with the corresponding progression of mathematical tasks across the grade level. However, the spiral design of the curriculum failed to decongest the distribution of the content and learning competencies which became unrealistic to implement for general classrooms according to the level of cognitive development of Filipino learners as revealed by the feedbacks and experiences of mathematics teachers. The K to 10 Mathematics curriculum needs revision covering the most essential learning competencies (vertically arranged) per content area anchored on international benchmarks.
Project double barrel (PDB) Crime statistics Drug surrenderers Index crime Non-index crime Illegal drugs Philippine national police (PNP) sorsogon. It is a fact that criminality related to illegal drugs is, indeed, a social problem which affects the growth of the nation and every aspect of community life. This study analyzed the profile of drug surrenderers and the crime statistics in the Province of Sorsogon during the implementation of Project Double Barrel in the Philippines. It was found out that most of the drug surrenderers are from the marginalized sectors belonging to informal workers, construction workers and jobless. There was a notable decrease in the crime volume incidents during the implementation of Project Double Barrel in the province. Due to constraints in the number of police personnel, however, there is no significant difference in the crime solution efficiency (CSE) as compared to the previous year. Physical injury and theft were the highest among the recorded index crime while most of the non-index crime incidents recorded was related to vehicular traffic incidents and other violation of street laws. Contribution/ Originality: This is one of the very few studies which have investigated the impact to crime statistics of the intensified implementation of the Anti-illegal Drug Campaign also known as Project Double Barrel (PDB) in the Philippines during the term of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. INTRODUCTIONA substantial number of laws and literature on reducing crime volume are available in every nation of the world, but it has never ceased since the biblical crime at the Garden of Eden (Genesis 4:8). Crime situation has been recognized as an indicator of a peaceful, orderly, and safe community. Moreover, a safe and secured environment is a key factor in fostering investment and economic growth in a country.Scholars worldwide recognize that the commission of the crime and the use of illicit substances are both deviant, problematic behaviors that cause vast amounts of human suffering and societal problems. This argument can be strengthened by the investigation made by Nordstrom and Dackis (2011) who found out that active use of illegal drugs tends to increase the frequency of criminal activity. The use of prohibited drug is, indeed, a social problem which affects every aspect of community life. Villar (2015) underscores that peace and order and illegal drug activities are two non-economic problems that affect every country's economy. Without peace and order, operations of business and industries are disrupted. White and Gorman (2000) stress some social, psychological and cultural factors that may be used to identify people who are at risk of becoming offenders and/or drug users. The lack of available reference materials for Number Theory course intended for the Filipino learners of the Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) delimits the attainment of the program objectives in terms of content standards. This descriptive-developmental study evaluated and tested the effectiveness of the developed Number Theory Worktext for Mathematics students of Teacher Education programs. The purposively chosen Mathematics professors/instructors, graduate and undergraduate Mathematics major students in Bicol region evaluated the worktext in terms of content and coverage, theoretical considerations, appearance/visual appeal, and language used using the adopted assessment form for instructional materials. Results show that the worktext is valid and reliable as classroom instructional material and can significantly improve the performance of the students in the course. Further validation and periodic revisions of the materials shall be done to accommodate changes or updates in the Philippine Teacher Education program.
This paper was made possible through the collaborative effort of Sorsogon State College and the PNP Region V. This paper specifically focused on the performance of the PNP in the province of Camarines Norte, as part of the entire research from the BIcol region.
