5estudando um grupo de mulheres que acusavam sentimento de tensão, inquietude, irritabilidade e apreensão, de 7 a 10 dias antes das menstruações e que melhoravam com o início do fluxo, denominou de tensão pré-menstrual a êsse conjunto de queixas, diferenciando-o de outro, caracterizado como desconfôrto pré-menstrual. Para Rees 12 , "a sín-drome consiste em tensão nervosa, irritabilidade, ansiedade, depressão, sensação de entumescimento do abdome, edemaciamento das pernas e dos dedos das mãos, tensão e prurido da pele, cefaléia, tonteiras e palpitações. Menos comumente ocorrem sonolência, sêde e apetite excessivos, aumento do desejo sexual e, em alguns casos, aumento da tendência à asma, enxaqueca, rinite vasomotora e epilepsia". Mayer, citado por Fortin e Wittkower 4 , justifica o diagnóstico quando a sintomatologia aparece repetidamente em pelo menos quatro ciclos seguidos. Alguns autores costumam dividir a síndrome, conforme a intensidade dos sintomas, em leve, moderada e grave.Em 1945 Cooke 1 divulgou uma estatística da polícia francesa mostrando que 84% dos crimes de violência praticados por mulheres são perpetrados no período pré-menstrual e no início do fluxo. Morton e col.10 , em estudo efetuado em presidiárias, verificaram que 62% dos crimes de violência foram praticados na semana anterior ao fluxo e que 17% ocorreram durante o fluxo. Oleck e Stewart, ambos citados por Perr 11 , expressaram a opinião de que, em têrmos legais, a síndrome de tensão pré-menstrual, com sua hipoglicemia periódica, é análoga à "insanidade temporária", havendo contudo uma diferença básica: naquele existem evidências objetivas para o diagnóstico, podendo ser provada e, nesta, não. Skalicková e col. 13 mostraram que, em mulheres, 75% das tentativas de suicídio ocorreram no período pré-menstrual. Dalton 2 , estudando presidiárias, verificou que 22,4% dos crimes tinham sido praticados no período pré-menstrual (a autora considerou como fase pré-menstrual os 4 dias que antecedem o início do fluxo), e 26,3% durante a menstruação. Essa autora asseverou que a irritabilidade e as "explosões de temperamento", comuns nestas mulheres, podem levar à violência e que a depressão pode levar ao suicídio.O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar a distribuição dos crimes nos ciclos menstruais, particularmente no período pré-menstrual, e correlacioná-los com a síndrome de tensão pré-menstrual (TPM).
