Steneotarsonemus spinki constituye una de las plagas de reciente aparición y de las más notables para el arroz en Costa Rica. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar en campo las arvenses, asociadas a campos de arroz en Costa Rica, que sirven de hábitat al ácaro S. spinki. Entre agosto y septiembre, 2007, se tomaron muestras de plantas asociadas a 16 campos de arroz Oryza sativa, en cuatro zonas arroceras: Brunca, Pacífico Central, Huetar Atlántico y Chorotega; afectadas por altas densidades poblacionales del ácaro S. spinki. Con la ayuda de estereoscopio se determinó la presencia de S. spinki en las especies arvenses Echinochloa colona, Eleusine indica, Oryza latifolia y Rottboellia cochinchinensis; y densidades poblacionales de 0,4; 0,1; 13,2 y 0,2 ácaros/ planta, respectivamente.Palabras clave: Oryza sativa, Steneotarsonemus spinki, plantas hospedantes.
El estudio se realizó en la Región Chorotega y en la Región Pacífico Central. Las características de la Región Chorotega la ubican a una altura de 20 msnm, con una temperatura promedio de 27,85 ºC, precipitación de 152,86 mm, humedad relativa de 77,67 %., Se clasifica como zona de vida tipo Bosque Tropical Seco y la Región Pacífico Central, se encuentra a una altitud de 10 msnm, un promedio de 328 mm de precipitación, 27 ºC de temperatura y 77 % de humedad relativa, se encuentra en la zona de vida, Bosque Tropical Húmedo. Se evaluaron variedades criollas (multiplicación y preservación de semillas) y materiales de rendimiento (líneas que se convertirán en variedades). Los datos de las líneas se promediaron y agruparon, basados en la preferencia o no del ácaro. Se formaron cuatro grupos con su respectiva escala y descripción. El comportamiento de S. spinki en las variedades criollas indicó que la variedad con más huevos fue Rex Oro (309) seguida de Chin Chin (275) y las que no presentaron huevos fueron las variedades Oryzica turipana, Miravalles, Blue Bonnet, CR-1821 y CR-4477. En cuanto a inmaduros la variedad más susceptible fue Chin Chin y las que no tuvieron fueron Oryzica turipana, Miravalles, Blue Bonnet, CR-1821, CR-4477, Tenorio y Gallote. En cuanto a la presencia de adultos la más susceptible fue Chin Chin y las que no se infestaron fueron Oryzica turipana, Miravalles, Blue Bonnet, CR-1821, CR-4477 y la Orosí. Las líneas de mayor rendimiento en la Región Chorotega fueron la CT15671-15-4-5-1-1-M con 5,8 t/ ha y obtuvo un promedio de 278 ácaros/ planta (a/ p) , CT15672-12-1-5-2-4-M con 5.6 t/ ha y con 96 a/ p, CT15765-13-7-4-2-1-M con 4,7 t/ ha y 0 ácaros, CT15675-7-1-7-3-2-M con 2 ácaros/ planta y CT15672-12-1-1-2-3-M con 4,0 t/ ha con 0 a/ p. En la Región Pacífico Central, los materiales de mayores rendimientos de campo fueron CT15675-7-1-4-2-1-M con 7,7 t/ ha, además no presentó durante las evaluaciones la presencia del ácaro, seguido de CT15765-18-1-5-3-2-M con 6,9 t/ ha, con cero ácaros, CT15672-12-1-2-1-1-M, con un promedio de 10,5 a/ p. No se encontró relación entre la población y el rendimiento ya que las líneas y variedades más infestadas fueron las más productivas. Por lo resultados preliminares de esta investigación es posible que la etapa fenológica, el manejo del cultivo y el clima influyeron en la población y afectaron el rendimiento.Palabras claves: Germoplasma, arroz, variedades, líneas Oryza sativa, Steneotarsonemus spinki, Tarsonemidae.
El estudio se realizó en el cantón Central de Alajuela en el año 2000.Los principales insectos y ácaros encontrados causando daños al cultivo son los siguientes: Brachypnoea sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Undulambia polystichalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Orthezia sp. (Hemiptera: Orthezidae), Rhizoecus sp. (Hemiptera: Rhyzoecidae) y los ácaros Hemitarsonemus tepidariorum y Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Acari: Tarsonemiidae). El estudio se realizó durante los meses de febrero y mayo del año 2009 en la localidad de Ujarrás, Paraíso de Cartago, Costa Rica, a una altura de 900 msnm con una temperatura promedio de 25 °C, y una precipitación promedio de 3500 mm. El objetivo de este estudio fue valorar si la presencia de la mosca blanca se relaciona con el blanqueamiento del cultivo de chayote e identificar la (s) especie (s) relacionadas. Para tal efecto se construyeron ocho jaulas con dimensiones 2,0 m de alto y 0,70 m de ancho, en las cuales, se colocó una maceta con una semilla del cultivo de chayote (sin brotar). En cuatro de las jaulas se introdujeron adultos de mosca blanca y las otras se mantuvieron aisladas del insecto. Durante el período de estudio se realizó un total de seis evaluaciones para contar el número total de peciolos de color verde y los que presentaban blanqueamiento. Se empleó un análisis de covarianza, donde la covariable fue el número total de peciolos. Además, se analizó la relación entre el número de adultos de mosca blanca introducidos en las jaulas y la cantidad de peciolos descoloridos, con base a la prueba de correlación de Pearson. Las plantas con presencia de mosca blanca presentaron un 49,79% de peciolos blancos. En las plantas sin la presencia del insecto los peciolos se mantuvieron verdes en un 100%. La mosca blanca relacionada con está decoloración es la especie Bemisia tabaci biotipo B. Observaciones realizadas indican que factores tales como: la nutrición inadecuada, disminución del riego y temperaturas altas predisponen a las plantas de chayote a un aumento en la incidencia del blanqueamiento.No obstante, la presencia del insecto es indispensable para que el síntoma se manifieste.Palabras claves: Bemisia tabaci biotipo B, peciolos verdes, peciolos blancos.
El ácaro del arroz Steneotarsonemus spinki Smiley se encontró en Costa Rica en el año 2004, como parte del complejo de organismos causantes del vaneado de la panícula y la pudrición de la vaina de arroz. Con el fin de evaluar la sobrevivencia de este ácaro en las plantas hospedantes Oryza sativa, Oryza latifolia y Echinochloa colona, se desarrollaron dos estudios bajo condiciones de invernadero e in vitro durante los meses de octubre y noviembre de 2007, en la Hacienda La Ligia, ubicada en la región arrocera Pacífico Central de Costa Rica.Se estudió en invernadero la sobrevivencia, crecimiento poblacional y estructura poblacional a partir de infestaciones, directa y voluntaria del ácaro. En el ensayo de invernadero se realizaron muestreos durante 18 días cada 24 horas con ayuda de un estereoscopio, y se cuantificó el número de individuos de S. spinki encontrados por cada etapa de desarrollo en cada especie. El ácaro completó su ciclo de vida en O. sativa y O. latifolia, y en la especie arvense E. colona solo se observaron hembras, huevos y larvas móviles. Se obtuvieron tres tasas de sobrevivencia: TE (Tasa de establecimiento): 1,70 y 0,79; TFS (Tasa finita desobrevivencia): 3,54 y 4,53; TIS (Tasa instantánea de sobrevivencia): 1,08 y 1,34; para O. sativa y O. latifolia, respectivamente; y dos tasas de crecimiento poblacional: r1 (Tasa media de crecimiento): 18,19 y 22,51; r2 (Tasa de crecimiento per capita): 0,60 y 0,69; para O. sativa y O. latifolia, respectivamente. El ácaro tuvo un crecimiento poblacional de tipo exponencial durante el período de evaluación. En el ensayo in vitro se realizaron muestreos cada 12 horas y se obtuvo una duración media del ciclo de vida de S. spinki desde huevo hasta adulto de siete días a temperatura de 25° C. La mortalidad durante el ciclo de vida fue de 62 %, 74 % y 100 %, para O. sativa, O. latifolia y E. colona, respectivamente. Se concluyó que S. spinki solo se presenta como planta hospedante alterna en los campos de arroz en Costa Rica, la especie arvense O. latifolia; y E. colona es una planta hospedante ocasional que permite el refugio transitorio por cortos períodos de tiempo.Palabras clave: Oryza sativa, Oryza latifolia, Echinochloa colona, crecimiento, estructura poblacional, invernadero.
