Las conductas sedentarias se han convertido en uno de los principales factores de comorbilidad en el mundo, siendo estas reforzadas por factores ambientales y socio-demográficos del contexto donde se desenvuelven los individuos y que son parte del quehacer diario, desencadenando e incrementando, el sobre peso, las alteraciones metabólicas y enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles, sobre todo en personas adultas.
Este estudio pretende determinar la relación entre las barreras percibidas para la práctica de actividad física y los niveles de sedentarismo de la población universitaria, para lo cual se realizó un estudio cuantitativo de corte trasversal, en 2096 estudiantes de diferentes universidades, tanto públicas como privadas de la República Dominicana. Los resultados indicaron que el 36.1% los estudiantes son sedentarios y el 30.1% manifestaron que la mayor barrera percibida fue la falta de voluntad, seguida de la falta de energía, en cuanto a la relación entre los niveles de actividad física y las barreras percibidas indicaron, que la falta de voluntad es la barrera que más se presenta entre los estudiantes, siendo esta mayor entre las mujeres, quienes indican un deseo por realizar actividad física pero no se logran comprometerse con esta de forma regular.
