Learning theories have seen the development of students’ higher order thinking skills a quintessential educational goal for all students, as the absence of such skills in learning leads to students’ difficulty in answering questions that are analytical, critical, creative, and problem-solving. What is more, the prevailing literacy scoring instruments have yet to take into account the Indonesian cultural context despite the fact that culture is such an important vehicle in strengthening the identity of a nation. In order to address this problem, employing a research-and-development method, a HOTS-based reading literacy scoring device model was proposed in this research. In the development stage, the model was tested to 476 junior high school students in two separate islands in Indonesia: Java and Bali. The results of the qualitative assessment from the experts showed that the product developed in principle had fulfilled the requirements. Meanwhile, the validity and reliability test results demonstrated that the instrument under investigation had met the requirements as a standardized reading literacy assessment product. Implicationally, therefore, the proposed model can be utilized in assessing students’ reading skill in Indonesian contexts.
This study aims to describe the activation of anxiety in reading scientific articles in Indonesian and English. Activation of anxiety was assessed based on brain tomography when reading was performed. This study used a oneshot case study. The elements described were the interpretations of the results of the EEG recording, including brain waves and brain maps in the form of brain tomography maps through neurolinguistic analysis using Standardized Low-Resolution Electromagnetic Brain Tomography (sLORETA). This study revealed that the condition of anxiety in reading activities occurs due to cognitive branching, failure to recognize words and failure to encode them into memory. The sLORETA method on reading activities can show the correct localization according to the activated brain function.

This study is motivated by the need for a descriptive and analytical research related to the basic dimensions of early reading skills of elementary school students to determine the level of students’ reading skills, including their difficulties in learning to read. This study aims to get a picture of the early reading skills of elementary school students in Bandung. The results of this study can be used as a guide for education practitioners, policy makers, and related institutions. Through a descriptive and analytical method, the findings are (1) 98% of students are able to identify letters in words, to analyze words, to identify the direction of letters, and to arrange letters into words. (2) 96% of students are able to strip words into syllables, to sort syllables in words, to identify words with the same forms, to identify words with the same meanings, to replace words with logical words, to insert words in incomplete sentences, and to identify abstract words. (3) The students seem to have difficulties in identifying similar consonant sounds, in identifying similarities in vowel and schwa sounds, in identifying sounds that are similar in sentences, and in identifying reversed sounds. Only 57% of students do not encounter obstacles. (4) 90% of students are capable of making sentences from random words, making sentences from words that are not sequential, correcting sentences that have wrong words, identifying simple sentences in paragraphs, and understanding simple sentences. (5) 70% of students have the ability to understand shapes, sizes, locations, and colors. This study has implications for the need for an integrated remedial program that can be used by both teachers and parents, especially for students who have difficulties with sound identification abilities.
