Temporal Evolution of the Atmospheric Variables associated with Strong Cold Fronts in Cuiabá, MS, from 1996 to 2015 A B S T R A C TThis study presents a climatology of strong cold fronts that acted in Cuiabá (MT) from 1996 to 2015 as well as a temporal evolution of atmospheric fields when these systems occurred. Cold fronts, regardless of intensity, were identified in the CLIMANÁLISE bulletins from the National Institute for Space Research. After that, a specific methodology was applied for the selection of cases considered strong and, based on this information, maps with data from the ERA5 reanalysis were built in order to provide a view of the spatial pattern of the atmospheric variables. From 1996 to 2015, 8 strong cold fronts occurred; winter, which is the driest season in the studied region, is also the season with the highest frequency of these fronts. Strong cold fronts acting in Cuiabá, in general, form three days earlier on the coast of Argentina and move in a southwest-northeast direction reaching Cuiabá. These fronts are responsible for dropping in air temperature, but have little influence on precipitation. Keywords: cold fronts; temperature; precipitation; Mato Grosso.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
