Introdução: Os impactos gerados pela atividade mineradora de pequena escala abrangem diversas áreas e ocasionam alterações geomorfológicas, biológicas, hídricas e atmosféricas. Apesar de ser uma atividade artesanal, a Mineração de Pequena Escala no município de Pedro II tem causados impactos complexos em áreas diversas os quais têm sido relativizados e considerados invisíveis aos olhos da sociedade local. Objetivo: Este estudo objetiva mostrar o lado invisível da extração da opala no município de Pedro II a partir da identificação dos impactos nocivos causados por essa atividade a comunidade local. Métodos: Este estudo constituiu numa pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa, através do método estudo de caso, apresentando como fonte de dados, artigos, livros, relatórios técnicos, visita in loco e entrevistas semiestruturadas com sujeitos envolvidos com a extração da opala. Resultados: Os principais resultados indicam a existência de impactos sólidos em toda atividade minerária da opala que são relativizados e considerados invisíveis pela sociedade local tais como a ausência de políticas públicas que reconheçam a pluralidade dos interesses envolvidos, a inanição dos órgãos de fiscalização e fomento, a exploração do trabalho por meio da informalidade, a venda ilegal das gemas, a modificação da paisagem e do espaço, o comprometimento da fauna e da flora, dentre outros. Sendo assim, a identificação e análise desses impactos relativizados e considerados invisíveis são essenciais para o entendimento da temática estudada. Justificativa: Salienta-se que este estudo possa servir para a efetivação de discussões racionais e mais aprofundadas sobre as consequências que estes impactos nocivos poderão trazer para a região estudada a médio e longo prazo.
