Several ciliated protists form symbiotic associations with a diversity of microorganisms, leading to drastic impact on their ecology and evolution. In this work, two Euplotes spp. sampled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were identified based on morphological and molecular features as Euplotes woodruffi strain Sq1 and E. encysticus strain Sq2 and investigated for the presence of endosymbionts. While E. woodruffi Sq1 stably hosts two bacterial populations, namely Polynucleobacter necessarius (Betaproteobacteria) and a new member of the family "Candidatus Midichloriaceae" (Alphaproteobacteria, Rickettsiales), here described as "Candidatus Bandiella woodruffii," branching with a broad host range bacterial group found in association with cnidarians, sponges, euglenoids, and some arthropods; in E. encysticus Sq2 no symbiotic bacterium could be detected. The dispersion ability of this novel bacterium was tested by co-incubating E. woodruffi Sq1 with three different ciliate species. Among the tested strains "Ca. B. woodruffii" could only be detected in association with E. encysticus Sq2 with a prevalence of 20 % after 1 week and 40 % after 2 weeks, maintaining this level for up to 6 months. Nevertheless, this apparent in vitro association was abolished when E. woodruffi Sq1 donor was removed from the microcosm, suggesting that this bacterium has the capacity for at least a short-term survival outside its natural host and the aptitude to ephemerally interact with other organisms. Together, these findings strongly suggest the need for more detailed investigations to evaluate the host range for "Ca. B. woodruffii" and any possible pathogenic effect of this bacterium on other organisms including humans.
The bromeliad habitat contributes to a high biodiversity and we recorded three treefrog species as new phoretic agents of ostracods, and a first case of hyperphoresy among treefrogs, ostracods and ciliates, in these habitats of Atlantic Forest. Densities of ciliates and ostracods showed significant relationships suggesting the importance of hyperphoresy for ciliate dispersion. Most bromeliad species are able to amplify and sustain the biodiversity due to water storage in a tank formed by their tightly-overlapping leaf bases. Into these tanks, many aquatic organisms live in the water retained (phytotelm) and for them, the bromeliads function as ecological islands (Frank and Lounibos 1987;Little and Hebert 1996) in the sense that the bromeliad tank is a small unit of water surrounded by terrestrial environment. For animals that have their all life cycle inside the water retained in the bromeliad tank, this relative isolation constitutes a considerable restriction for dispersion and colonization. To disperse, some of these organisms need to attach to the body of other animals. Phoresy (from the Greek pho´resis) refers in ecology to interspecific relationships in which one organism (the phoretic) attaches to the body of another (the host) for the implied purpose of dispersal (Houck and O'Connor 1991). One of the few examples of phoresy available regarding the environment of the bromeliads and their associated forms of life is
The aim of this research was to study the ciliated protozoa community at three sampling stations that receive different levels of domestic sewage along the São Pedro Stream in the municipality of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in order to determine the influence of organic pollution on this community and to assess the feasibility of using ciliates as water quality indicators. Four physical-chemical parameters of the water samples were evaluated: dissolved oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity, pH and temperature. The sediment was obtained manually, using dredges with capacity of 300 mL, at each collection point. Point 1 was located in a rural region that receives a low sewage load, while Points 2 and 3 were located in populated regions receiving high sewage loads. We found 22 ciliate species, of which 18 are included in the saprobic system and are considered bioindicators. These showed beta-mesosaprobic environments at Point 1 and alfa-mesosaprobic to polisaprobic environments at Points 2 and 3. The low levels of dissolved oxygen and the high electrical conductivity values at Points 2 and 3, together with the strong similarity between the ciliate taxocenoses of these points and the weak similarity between Point 1 and the other two, confirm the high sewage loads received at the latter two points. The combination of the biological indicators and physical-chemical analyses therefore proved itself to be an efficient method of evaluating water quality, and has excellent potential to support decisions on the conservation of headwaters and recuperation of degraded environments in lotic systems. Keywords: ciliated protozoa, organic pollution, water quality, watercourses.
