Visando o autoconhecimento, a fisioterapia possibilita maior independência do cidadão cego através da estimulação da propriocepção e da exterocepção, fazendo que o deficiente visual obtenha uma melhor qualidade de vida. Trata-se de um trabalho retrospectivo descritivo realizado com um grupo de deficientes visuais freqüentadores da Escola de Educação Especial Louis Braille, no município de Pelotas/RS; com o objetivo de relatar os atendimentos fisioterápicos realizados pelos acadêmicos do 7º semestre do Curso de Fisioterapia da Universidade Católica de Pelotas (UCPel), no 1º semestre de 2007. A população é composta de 6 alunos com deficiência visual, sendo 3 do sexo masculino e 3 do sexo feminino, com média de idade de 8 anos e todos residentes no município de Pelotas/RS. Os diagnósticos clínicos apresentam algumas particularidades, destacando-se 4 pacientes com paralisia cerebral e 2 com retinopatia de prematuridade; além da deficiência visual e de outras co-morbidades associadas que comprometem o desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor desses pacientes, o que indica a necessidade de um acompanhamento fisioterápico; percebendo-se, assim, a eficácia de um programa fisioterapêutico de melhora na qualidade de vida dessas crianças, identificando as deficiências somáticas e de relação interpessoal e conhecendo suas capacidades e limitações para intervir e tornar o deficiente visual mais independente e inserido em seu meio social.
