HPV type 16, 18, and co-infection of both types showed high prevalence in oral squamous cell carcinoma. The prevalence of HPV type 18 was found to be higher than HPV type 16 and co-infection in oral leukoplakia. It was observed that the tongue and palate lesions in the oral squamous cell carcinoma patients showed high prevalence of HPV type 16, type 18, and co-infection compared with other sites.
Tonsilloliths or tonsil stones are calcifications that form in the crypts of the palatal tonsils. These calculi are composed of calcium salts, alone or in combination with other mineral salts, and are usually small, although there have been occasional reports of large tonsilloliths or calculi in peritonsillar locations. Most often, these calculi are asymptomatic and small, often detected only by computed tomography (CT), although large calculi may be visible in routine panoramic radiographs. Although tonsilloliths normally do not require medical attention, they may become large enough to cause a variety of symptoms requiring treatment. Here, we report the case of a 45-yearold male with difficulty opening the mouth and previous treatment for carcinoma of the left buccal mucosa 6 years earlier. Routine orthopantomography revealed large, bilateral, radiopaque areas over the ramus of the mandible. A diagnosis of multiple tonsilloliths was made after confirming the exact location of the radiopacities on CT.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
