The Paper describes the yielding characteristics of Bothkennar clay, as shown by stress-path triaxial tests. Computer-controlled equipment and high resolution instrumentation were used to obtain a detailed picture of the behaviour of the undisturbed clay at very small and large strains. The results confirm an earlier hypothesis that the soil's behaviour at small strains can be described by two kinematic sub-yield surfaces existing within an initial bounding surface. Consolidation beyond the initial bounding surface is shown to bring about a progressive breakdown of the clay's initial sedimentary structure. Once this has occurred the soil's stress—strain and undrained strength characteristics become highly dependent on the stress conditions under which consolidation takes place.
A fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) finite element (FE) formulation is presented that considers freezing and thawing in water-saturated soils. The formulation considers each thermal, hydraulic and mechanical process, and their various interactions, through fundamental physical laws and models. By employing a combination of ice pressure, liquid pressure and total stress as state variables, a new mechanical model has been developed that encompasses frozen and unfrozen behaviour within a unified effective-stress-based framework. Important frozen soil features such as temperature and porosity dependence of shear strength are captured inherently by the model. Potential applications to geotechnics include analysis of frost heave, foundation stability or mass movements in cold regions. The model's performance is demonstrated with reference to the in situ pipeline frost heave tests conducted by Slusarchuk et al. Detailed consideration is given to FE mesh design, the influence of hydraulic parameters, and the treatment of air/ground interface boundary conditions. The THM simulation is shown to reproduce, with fair accuracy, the observed pipeline heave and the porosity growth driven by water migration.KEYWORDS: ground freezing; numerical modelling; temperature effects; water flow Dans la présente communication, on présente une formulation aux éléments finis thermo-hydro-mécanique (THM) à accouplement intégral, pour l'examen du gel et du dégel dans des sols saturés d'eau.
This Paper describes a simple technique for accurately measuring the mean local axial strains of triaxial samples over a central gauge length. The technique makes use of an axial displacement gauge which is a development of one devised by Burland & Symes (1982) which makes use of electrolytic levels. The device can resolve to less than 1 μ.m over a range of 15 mm, is simple to mount on the specimen and is not damaged when the sample is taken to failure. The results of undrained triaxial tests are presented for a wide spectrum of soil types ranging from sands through intact, reconstituted and remoulded low plasticity till, undisturbed London clay to intact unweathered chalk. The test results show that conventional external measurements of displacement contain errors which are frequently so large that their use in the determination of soil stiffness at working levels of stress is invalid. The errors mainly result from tilting of the sample, bedding at the end platens and the effects of compliance in the apparatus. Although much more experimental work is required before general conclusions can be drawn about the small strain behaviour of soils the results presented lead to some important observations on the undrained stiffness, linearity and yielding behaviour of soils at small strains.
Particle crushing, shear banding, interface abrasion and migration of crushing products all have the potential to influence the behaviour of displacement piles in sands. This paper considers these particulate processes, reporting experiments with model displacement piles installed in uniform pressurised sand and parallel interface ring shear tests. The findings offer new insights into the mechanics of displacement piles in sands.
The paper examines the validity of assuming that granular material behaviour can be considered as cross-anisotropic, linear elastic, within a kinematic ‘kernel’ yield surface that is dragged through stress space with the current effective stress point. Data from more than 300 high-resolution triaxial probing and bender element tests performed on 15 samples are reported in which both small stress cycles and shear wave measurements in both the vertical and horizontal directions were conducted on sand and glass ballotini specimens under various effective stress states. It was found that behaviour is not fully elastic. However, provided the effective stress ratio, R, was kept below around 2·2, most features of the very small-strain behaviour could be described in terms of strongly anisotropic compliance terms that varied with void ratio and current effective stress state, apparently independently of the specimen's stress history. The anisotropy depended on the effective stress states. Specimens loaded to R values exceeding 2·2 that experienced shear-induced dilation followed different patterns of behaviour. The concept of a kinematic closed elastic yield surface, or ‘kernel’, proved to be an appropriate way of describing the pronounced effects of recent stress history on the apparent limits to the linear range observed in a wide range of stress probing tests.
