A imposição no mercado de trabalho e o cuidado centrado ao alienado contribuíram para a institucionalização da categoria, tanto na prática, quanto no ensino. Assim, apresenta-se uma análise histórica da ascensão do saber psiquiátrico, do cuidado prestado aos alienados no Brasil em diferentes períodos da história e a consequente criação da primeira Escola de Enfermagem do país. A retrospectiva histórica permite a análise dos fatos ocorridos de maneira crítica e reflexiva, procurando respostas a questionamentos que permeiam a prática arcaica e contemporânea da Enfermagem em Saúde Mental. A assistência aos doentes mentais foi progredindo após o início do trabalho de Enfermagem, levando em consideração o aspecto humanitário da profissão. Conhecer a trajetória da alienação mental brasileira e o surgimento de seus frutos é resgatar a história e a memória daqueles que lutaram por mudanças na Saúde Mental no Brasil, denunciando as péssimas condições de instituições que privavam o doente mental.
O objetivo deste estudo é caracterizar mulheres alienadas transferidas do Hospício Nacional de Alienados para a Colônia de Alienados do Engenho de Dentro (1921-1927). Estudo na perspectiva da história serial, utilizando observação documental para realizar análise das fontes, que são os prontuários. Foram elencados 164 prontuários de alienadas transferidas para a Colônia do Engenho de Dentro. Após análise dos prontuários, as alienadas foram caracterizadas por meio dos registros descritos nos prontuários, traçando perfil etário, étnico, patológico dentre outros. Concluímos que, de fato, encontrou-se descrito registros com dados concretos sobre as mulheres alienadas. Porém, nenhum dado sobre cuidado de enfermagem pode ser extraído desses documentos.
