[Purpose] Evaluate the association of primary headache and Temporomandibular Dysfunction
in healthy adolescents from the Santos, SP, Brazil. [Participants and
Methods] A total of 208 adolescents, aged 11 to 16 years old were randomly selected at the
dentistry clinic at Universidade Metropolitana de Santos. For that, the Fonseca Anamnestic
Index was applied, including information such as: limitation when opening the mouth and
moving the jaw, headaches, pain in the temporomandibular joint, noises in the
temporomandibular joint, and the habit of tightening or grinding the teeth. The data were
submitted to descriptive statistical analysis and the χ2 test and Fisher’s
exact test were used to evaluate the association of categorical variables. [Results] The
results were 63% of male participants, and 61% of female participants had
Temporomandibular Dysfunction. In both genders headache was associated with the presence
of Temporomandibular Dysfunction, with 93 participants with light headache and 39 with
moderate headache. [Conclusion] There was an association between headache and the presence
of Temporomandibular Dysfunction, and the percentage of affected males was slightly higher
among this association. In the sample of adolescents who presented Temporomandibular
Dysfunction, moderate headache was the main reported symptom of both genders.
Objective: The aim of the present study to assess the association between the prevalence of probable bruxism and orofacial factors in children three to nine years of age. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 120 children who sought treatment at the paediatric dental clinic of the Metropolitan University of Santos in 2017. The guardians filled out a questionnaire designed using the criteria of the American Association of Sleep Medicine for the diagnosis of bruxism. The participants were also submitted to a clinical examination for the evaluation of malocclusion. Results: The obtained results were computed and statistical analysis was carried out adopting a level of significance of 95%. Results: The prevalence of bruxism among the children was 39,2%; 17.5% in the primary dentition and 21.6% in the mixed dentition. The analysis revealed that bruxism was associated with headache (OR=2.63; 95 CI:1.1-5.8) and open bite (OR=3.23; 95CI:1.16-8.94). Conclusion: There is a strong association between bruxism and headache, and bruxism and open bite in children.
Os estudantes e atuantes da área da saúde, aparentemente, têm níveis mais elevados de depressão, ansiedade ou estresse do que a população em geral, o que traduz em um maior risco de sofrimento psicológico. O apoio psicológico é uma forma de terapia onde o paciente expressa seus anseios, medos e problemas, em busca de uma solução para tal mal-estar ou sofrimento, assim, promovendo autonomia ao paciente e o ajudando a encontrar meios de resolver seus problemas, pois o capacita a lidar com situações complicadas. Tal relação de apoio é fundamental no bom desenvolvimento do profissional Cirurgião Dentista e de sua estabilidade emocional. Sendo assim, este estudo avaliou a autopercepção da necessidade de apoio psicológico e prevalência de sintomas de ansiedade e depressão nos estudantes do curso de Graduação em Odontologia da Universidade Metropolitana de Santos-SP. A amostra foi composta por 188 acadêmicos do curso de graduação em Odontologia da Universidade Metropolitana de Santos, de ambos os sexos, selecionados a partir do número de alunos regularmente matriculados na instituição. Os dados foram coletados por meio de um questionário composto por 10 questões objetivas e mais 20 questões objetivas do Self Report Questionnaire (SRQ 20). Os dados coletados no questionário foram sobre acompanhamento psicológico, anseios e medos relacionados a profissão, opinião a respeito de tratamento psicológico, e possíveis traumas em pacientes. Os estudantes de odontologia demonstraram episódios de ansiedade perante a profissão exercida pela responsabilidade por se tratar da saúde dos pacientes. Sendo assim, conclui-se que é importante acompanhamento psicológico para os alunos para que entendam e se adaptem a realidade da futura profissão.
