A análise das formulações acerca dos processos saúde-doença, morte e luto evidencia transformações social e culturais, ocorridas em determinado momento histórico. Com o processo de secularização ocorreu uma perda de sentido do sofrimento associado à transcendência, nas sociedades ocidentais. A ênfase no presente, a busca contínua de prazer e o exercício do livre-arbítrio tornam-se referências centrais. Neste contexto, movimentos sociais pelos direitos dos doentes, e grupos da classe médica afirmam o direito a não sofrer. Se não evitado, o sofrimento deve ter a menor duração e intensidade possíveis. É neste sentido que as propostas de atenção em torno do luto estão inseridas. Pelo fato de o luto constituir um processo em que o sofrimento é inerente, ele deve ser compreendido, cuidado e, na medida do possível, elaborado, amenizado ou, até, evitado. Manuais destinados a profissionais de saúde abordam o tema, sugerindo uma superação do luto, independente da perspectiva teórica adotada. É delimitada uma duração, referente ao que seria uma vivência normal ou patológica do luto, assim como são elaboradas prescrições, sejam elas preventivas ou curativas. Manuais e livros-texto, nacionais e internacionais, com caráter prescritivo, destinados a profissionais de saúde, configuram-se como objeto de análise desta pesquisa, uma vez que tais formulações refletem o contexto sociocultural. Na gestão contemporânea do processo de morrer, profissionais de saúde buscam promover ampla aceitação social da morte e uma preparação para o luto, para todos os atores sociais envolvidos nos cuidados ao final da vida. A proliferação de pesquisas e de propostas terapêuticas sobre o luto é evidenciada pela publicação de manuais específicos sobre o tema, a partir do século XXI. Afinal, o que o luto representa na cultura ocidental contemporânea, de modo a se encontrar cercado de atenção dos profissionais de saúde que objetivam sua superação? Frente ao risco de o processo de luto se tornar patológico, os saberes `psi' não estariam promovendo um controle e/ou autorregulação das emoções, no sentido de uma normatização deste evento?

O ofício antropológico é feito de reflexividade. Andamos sempre na corda bamba, entre fazer uma etnografia da bruxaria do ponto de vista da bruxa ou do ponto de vista de um geômetra, seguindo a famosa comparação de Clifford Geertz. Quando entramos no campo da saúde, o trabalho fica mais desafiador. Lidamos com emoções, com corporalidades, com doença, com dor, com morte. Lidamos, além disso, com uma instituição extremamente potente, do ponto de vista não apenas de sua penetração social, de sua capacidade de acolhimento de tudo isso, mas, sobretudo, de sua eficácia simbólica, fortemente enraizada nos corações e nas mentes de todos nós. Refiro-me à medicina e às demais especialidades que gravitam ao seu redor. Ofícios compostos por pessoas que tratam outras pessoas; que mexem nos seus corpos, nos seus espíritos; que criam parâmetros para aferi-los; que oferecem conselhos, drogas; que propõem tarefas. A pesquisa antropológica surge como contraponto necessário para trazer à cena o emaranhado de experiências que compõem essas relações entre os que tratam, olham, examinam e aqueles que são tratados, observados e examinados. Evidentemente, o pesquisador faz parte desse emaranhado, pois o sofrimento e o acolhimento não lhe são estranhos. Os textos que fazem parte deste volume buscam refletir sobre essa posição reflexiva do pesquisador. Não se trata de uma posição necessária, mas, sim, inevitável. Não é uma escolha de quem pesquisa, mas uma consequência inevitável de habitar o mesmo mundo dos que sofrem e dos que acolhem o sofrimento do outro.
