Background: Variable models of care have been adopted in different countries in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Egypt has assigned certain hospitals specifically for the quarantine of COVID-19 patients, where operational medical teams work continuously for 14 days, after which they are released for self-isolation at home for a similar period. Aims: The study aimed to evaluate and compare perceived adverse psychological symptoms (stress, anxiety, depression), and insomnia by health-care professionals working in quarantine and non-quarantine hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic in Egypt, and to explore associated factors with adverse psychological symptoms and insomnia. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was performed in April 2020, using a snowball sampling method. Sociodemographic information perceived general health, healthy lifestyle, insomnia (using Insomnia Severity Index), adverse psychological symptoms (using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21), worries and concerns about COVID-19, future perspective about COVID-19, and coping strategies were collected. Background and Objectives:Many cases of gastrointestinal (GI) tumors as lymphoma, adenocarcinoma, and most of submucosal tumors (SMT) such as gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and leiomyoma are difficult to diagnose as they frequently yield negative endoscopic biopsies. We evaluated the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) in the diagnosis of endoscopic biopsy negative GI tumors.Patients and Methods:One hundred and nine patients with biopsy negative GI tumors were included in this prospective study. EUS and EUS-FNA were performed to all patients with cytopathologic examination.Results:There were 109 patients with endoscopic biopsy negative GI lesions, including 61 males (56%) and 48 females (44%), with the mean age of 54 years. Sixty-three cases (57.8%) were proved to have malignant lesions, among them there were 15 cases with high-risk GIST as proved by FNA and excision biopsy. Forty-six cases (42.2%) were proved to be benign; among them there were 21 cases presented with non-high-risk GIST. Endoscopic ultrasound had a sensitivity of 96.8%, specificity of 89.1%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 92.4%, negative predictive value (NPV) of 95.3%, and accuracy of 93.6%. EUS-FNA had a sensitivity of 87.3%, specificity of 100%, PPV of 100%, NPV of 85.2%, and accuracy of 92.7%.Conclusion:EUS with EUS-FNA is an accurate procedure in the diagnosis of GI tumors with negative endoscopic biopsies.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most common primary malignancy worldwide, and the third most common cause of death among cancers worldwide. HCC occurs in several pre-existing conditions, including hepatitis C, hepatitis B virus, and non-alcoholic cirrhosis. Egypt used to be the country with the heaviest hepatitis C virus (HCV) burden. The relationship between HCV and HCC is an important research area. In Egypt, HCC is a significant public health problem. A possible cause for the increasing rates of detection of HCC in Egypt is the mass screening program that was carried by the government for detecting and treating HCV. A multidisciplinary approach is now widely applied to HCC management in health centers all over Egypt. Different treatment modalities are available in Egypt, with success rates comparable to global rates. The Egyptian health authorities have made the elimination of HCV from Egypt a special priority, and this approach should lead to a decrease in number of HCC cases in the near future. In this article we review the current situation of HCC in Egypt, including epidemiological aspects, relevant risk factors for HCC development, strategies, and efforts established by health authorities for the screening and prevention of both HCV and HCC in Egypt. We highlight the different modalities for HCC treatment.
