Resumen La Fotónica es considerada una de las seis tecnologías clave (KET, por sus siglas en inglés) para el desarrollo de Europa, EEUU y demás naciones desarrolladas del mundo. Se admite que la Fotónica representará al siglo XXI, lo que la Electrónica ha significado para el siglo XX. La Fotónica es un campo de conocimiento horizontal por afectar a todos los sectores de aplicación siendo el de la Medicina, uno de los más beneficiados. En este artículo de revisión, tras una brevísima justificación de la importancia de la Fotónica en el avance de la Ciencia, de la Tecnologia y, en última instancia, la sociedad, se prosigue con una sucinta concepción doctrinal sobre la luz y algunas de sus propiedades más significativas. Tras ello, se continúa mostrando una serie de estructuras, dispositivos, sistemas, tratamientos (basadas o efectuadas mediante tecnologías de la luz) que se utilizan en clínica con el fin de mantener y/o recuperar la salud de los pacientes. Se prosigue mencionado algunas investigaciones relevantes en curso unas cercanas a su traslación a la clínica para su explotación y otras que para ello requieren todavía considerable esfuerzo de investigación y de desarrollo y se finalizará apuntando dos líneas de investigación en temáticas potencialmente disruptivas, a medio y largo plazo. De la integración de lo anterior, el lector, extraerá la conclusión del relevante papel que la Fotónica está jugando y, sobre todo, desempeñará en el avance de la Salud y de la Medicina del siglo en curso.
