La transición a la vida adulta de los menores extranjeros no-acompañados – y, por ende, el papel de los servicios sociales especializados en la atención a esa etapa tan importante para quienes recibirán el nombre de ex-MENAs en la jerga institucional– constituye una de las etapas menos atendidas por las investigaciones académicas. Este artículo trata de identificar los retos y dificultades que los servicios sociales especializados enfrentan en la atención a esas personas al finalizar su acogida como menores de edad. Presentaremos los resultados de un estudio exploratorio cualitativo cuyo trabajo de campo reveló una serie de dificultades que puede presentarse en tres categorías (institucionales, contextuales y legales). Todas ellas revelan la necesidad de dotar a los llamados “programas de emancipación” con una organización estable, estandarizada y adecuadamente dotada de recursos económicos y técnicos. En el plano metodológico, los enfoques basados en el tejido comunitario aparecen como referencia óptima. En tercer lugar, otra necesidad confirmada en el estudio es la definición de rutas de transición planificadas, con apoyos jurídicos (permiso de residencia) y sociales, oportunidades educativas y de empleo.
