O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o nível de independência funcional de alunos com deficiência física e verificar as condições de acessibilidade das escolas em que estão incluídos no ensino regular. A amostra foi composta por alunos, de ambos os sexos, dos seis aos 18 anos de idade, matriculados nas escolas de um município do centro do Rio Grande do Sul. Para avaliar a acessibilidade utilizou-se um questionário adaptado do Ministério Público Federal, para a independência funcional foi utilizada a Medida de Independência Funcional (MIF). Embora a maioria das escolas avaliadas possuam rampas, escadas, corredores, portas e maçanetas adequadas, a acessibilidade dos alunos com deficiência física está, em parte, comprometida devido às barreiras arquitetônicas ainda existentes como acesso difícil desde a rua à falta de sinalização. Os gestores apontaram a dificuldade de alocação de verbas, a carência de profissionais e o acentuado grau de exigências presentes nas normas sobre acessibilidade, como fatores que dificultam uma melhor adequação da escola a fim de oferecer plena acessibilidade para os alunos com deficiência. Caracterizar as capacidades e limitações funcionais dos alunos com deficiências físicas e avaliar as condições de acessibilidade da escola permitem refletir e compreender quais efeitos essas condições podem ocasionar sobre a deficiência e como eles podem repercutir na participação do aluno nas demandas escolares e, consequentemente na oportunidade de aprender. Além disso, tais dados possibilitam planejar intervenções e modificações no ambiente para prover maior acessibilidade e colaborar para uma escola mais inclusiva.
