Verificar a sobrecarga física e mental e a ocorrência de sintomas osteomusculares em carroceiros da cidade de Santa Cruz do Capibaribe-PE. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo de estudo observacional descritivo. Foi obtida uma amostra por conveniência com 27 carroceiros do sexo masculino. Para a coleta de dados foi utilizado um questionário desenvolvido para esta pesquisa, que continha questões relativas às informações sociodemográficas, profissionais, características dos sintomas osteomusculares e carga física envolvida na tarefa. A carga mental do trabalho dos carroceiros foi avaliada através de três questões do Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) (CARLOTTO; CÂMARA, 2007). Para identificação da intensidade e local do corpo acometido por sintomas musculoesqueléticos foi utilizado o diagrama de Corlett e Bishop (IIDA, 1998). RESULTADOS: A profissão de carroceiro apresenta várias sobrecargas físicas e mentais para o desenvolvimento de doenças ocupacionais, tais como: carga horária excessiva, pausas inadequadas, elevado tempo de trabalho como carroceiro, alta carga transportada, sendo realizada de forma inadequada, sensação de esgotamento emocional e frustração. Ademais, foi identificada uma elevada ocorrência de sintomas musculoesqueléticos, dentre as elas, a mais frequente foi a dor lombar (80,8%). CONCLUSÃO: A ocorrência de sintomas osteomusculares nos carroceiros pode estar associada a grande sobrecarga física e mental a qual estão expostos estes profissionais.
