A etnomusicologia das terras baixas da América do Sul, detentora de algumas das descrições mais antigas do mundo sobre "música primitiva" -as de Léry sobre canções tupinambá do Rio de Janeiro (de 1578 [veja 1980]) e Montoya sobre categorias do mundo sonoro-musical guarani (de 1639 [1876]) 1 -não conheceu desenvolvimento moderno comparável, mesmo que de longe, àquela que teve como palco regiões como a África subsaariana, a América do Norte e o sudeste asiático. O estudo das razões para que isto tenha acontecido não faz parte deste trabalho. Durante os últimos trinta anos, porém, essa área acadêmica passou por um crescimento significativo que parece ter perspectiva de continuidade, particularmente no Brasil. Esse crescimento expressou-se pela publicação de monografias e outros tipos de textos etnomusicológicos -ensaios, artigos e outros -e outras especializações que encontram na música tema relevante.2 O quadro resultante de tais esforços é promissor, necessitando de análise na direção do desenho do perfil da música na região e da projeção de novas pesquisas.Este texto, dividido em duas partes, busca aproximar esta tarefa, centrando-se na produção escrita, levando em conta, somente de passagem, as produções fonográfica, videográfica e similares. Na primeira parte, levanto as principais características da literatura produzida no período. Professor do Departamento de Antropologia-UFSC RESUMO: Este artigo pretende contribuir para a etnologia das "flautas sagradas" nas Terras Baixas da América do Sul, retomando a análise de um episódio ocorrido entre 1947 e 1953, envolvendo Leonardo Villas Boas e os índios kamayurá, xinguanos tupi-guarani. Nesse momento, Leonardo manteve, continuada e publicamente, relações amorosas com Pele de Reclusa, esposa do grande xamã e chefe Kutamapù. O affair provocou comoção entre os índios, que colocaram um trio de flautas na casa do herói. Assim, quando Pele de Reclusa a freqüentava, via as flautas. Violada a regra que proíbe às mulheres ver as flautas, Pele de Reclusa sofreu estupro coletivo, o que originou seu ostracismo e o afastamento dos Villas Boas dos Kamayurá. Para estes, "ver" contrasta com "ouvir". A primeira noção aponta para uma forma analítica de conhecimento ("explicação"), a segunda, sintética ("compreensão"). A exacerbação da capacidade de "ver" é, para eles, sinal de associalidade-no caso dos feiticeiros-e de suprema socialidade-no caso dos pajés. O exagero da aptidão de "ouvir", ao contrário, é considerado condição de virtuosidade na música e nas artes verbais. Se entre esses índios, às mulheres é vedado ver as flautas, ouvi-las é delas esperado. As pistas para a compreensão indígena do episódio provêm de sua maneira de construção dos sentidos, dos gêneros e do poder-no todo, de sua forma de constituição do mundo: quando Pele de Reclusa violou o inviolável, Leonardo transformou-se em "flauta", sua casa na "casa das flautas", e os homens numa coletividade delas, tudo passando a ocorrer sob sua ética feroz. A Desidério Aytai, in memoriamO novo livro de Jean-Michel Beaudet, cerne do presente ensaio, está destinado a ser consagrado um clássico, possuindo todas as qualidades para em breve constar entre as obras fundamentais sobre a mesma área etnográfica (terras baixas da América do Sul) e mesmo tema (música), como Camêu (1977), Aytai (1985), Seeger (1987), Hill (1993 e Olsen (1996) 1 .Baseado em dissertação de doutorado defendida em 1983 (Beaudet 1983), o livro resulta de um trabalho de campo de cerca de quinze meses, entre 1977 e 1993. Trata-se de uma etnografia da música dos wayãpi, principalmente da aldeia Zidock (Alto Oiapoque, Guiana Francesa), tendo como centro a música das orquestras de clarinetes tule. O livro, dividido em quatro capítulos, além de uma introdução e conclusão, contém várias transcrições musicais e é bem ilustrado com fotos, mapas e diagramas. O CD que o acompanha tem boa qualidade acústica e suas gravações ilustram bem o texto, sendo que, no final do livro, há explicações sobre cada uma das faixas (:201-204).Os wayãpi somam cerca de 750 pessoas (dado de 1988 [:28]) e vivem em quatorze aldeias, os meridionais na região dos vales dos rios Jari e Araguari (Amapá) e os setentrionais no vale do Oiapoque (Guiana Francesa). Estes últimos chegaram à Guiana Francesa no século XIX, como resultado de um movimento migratório vindo do norte do Brasil.Os wayãpi falam uma língua da família tupi-guarani, cujas línguas são largamente utilizadas nas terras baixas, não apenas na Guiana Francesa e em muitas regiões do Brasil, mas também na Venezuela, Colôm-bia, Peru, Bolívia, Paraguai -onde uma de suas línguas, o guarani para-
