Causative verbs in scientific texts: attempt of typology Abstract Both a discursive modality and a strategy, causality allows the understanding, perception and justification of events. As a discursive strategy, popular scientific discourse circulates through linguistic signs perceptible in varying degrees. Causality is perceived explicitly, as manifested in the lexical level. Further, to validate a causal relationship in a given situation it is frequently necessary to recover (more or less) explicit terms that appear on the morphosyntactic level. Other implicit ways of linguistically expressing cause-or -unmarked cause‖-are likewise observed.
In the context of the linguistic study of authentic documents, the present work deals with verbal forms in –rait in the language of law, more precisely in a normative legislative discourse. The aim of this study is to interrogate the syntactic configurations and the semantic uses of this form in a normative legal corpus, in this case the French Civil Code, and to study them at the intersection of syntax and semantics to see if the syntactic contexts of use of this verb form have consequences in the semantic uses which are examined.
