MORPHOLOGICAL PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FRUITS OF UMBU-CAJAZEIRA POPULATIONS IN THE STATE OF BAHIAABSTRACT -The umbu-cajazeira is a fruit crop that occurs in all states of the Brazilian semi-arid Northeast region, usually scattered in anthropic areas, producing fruits that are used for fresh consumption, or processed into juices and pulp. The potential yield of this species is still unknown, since little is known about its variability regarding fruit characteristics, the main commercial structure of interest. The main objective of this study was to evaluate this variability within three populations in the State of Bahia, Brazil, being possible, through morphometric and physical and chemical fruit characteristics using cluster analysis, to demonstrate that there is enough genetic diversity between individuals of this species in the sampled areas. Among these genotypes, the Vavazinho accession is recommended for fresh fruit consumption and the Campo Grande-5 accession is adequate for pulp processing. Index Terms: Spondias, selection, genetic variability, plant breeding.
-The acerola tree (Malpighia emarginata Sessé & Moc. ex DC.) is a fruit species that has prospered in the Brazilian tropical regions, especially in the Northeast, thanks to the high content of vitamin C in the fruits, among other characteristics that make it attractive to the producer, such as early production. Although there is increasing demand for the product, the production of certified seedlings of good commercial varieties is still a barrier to further expansion of the crop. This review aims to present, in a comprehensive way, technical information on how the spread has been made since its introduction in the country, as well as innovations and advances. Traditionally, propagation is carried out through seeds, cuttings and by grafting on top of common acerola rootstocks, with no defined origin. The advances presented are focused on the use of new canopy and rootstock varieties, including the use of double grafting, minicutting and tissue culture, with studies still in progress, and use of new substrates such as coconut fiber. Index terms: Malpighia spp.,acerola, seedling management, plant pathology.
ROOTSTOCKS FOR SWEET ORANGE (CITRUS SINENSIS (L.) OSB.) IN RIO BRANCO, ACRE, BRAZILABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to evaluate the behaviour of seven sweet orange cultivars: Baia 101, Baianinha IAC 79, Monte Parnaso, Pêra D6, Natal 112, Valência 27 and Aquiri grafted on different rootstocks: Rangpur lime, Cleópatra and Sunki mandarins, and Carrizo citrange, in the environmental conditions of Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil. The experimental design was a split-plot, with the sweet orange cultivars as the main plots, the rootstocks as the subplots, and the four years of evaluation as replications. The Pêra D6, Natal 112 and Valência 27 sweet orange cultivars tended to have the highest yield when grafted on Rangpur lime rootstocks, and the Aquiri orange when grafted on Carrizo citrange. Compared to the other rootstocks used, the Rangpur lime tended to induce the highest yield/canopy volume and highest mean fruit weight, and the lowest total soluble solids and total acidity. Sweet orange cultivars of the Baia group (Baia 101, Baianinha IAC 79 and Monte Parnaso) produced fruit with low juice content, therefore they are not recommended for planting in Rio Branco. Based on the results, the rootstocks Carrizo citrange, Cleópatra mandarin and Rangpur lime are recommended for Aquiri sweet orange, and the Rangpur lime is recommended for Pêra D6, Natal 112 and Valência 27 sweet orange cultivars.Index terms: Amazon, sweet orange yield, fruit quality. NEMATODES: BIOINDICATOR OF SUSTAINABILITY AND EDAPHOCLIMATIC CHANGESABSTRACT -Due to their economic importance being unknown in most crops, apart from other pests, plant-parasitic nematodes have been frequently neglected in the agroecosystems, assuming 'status' only when their population is very high, causing accentuated damages which leads to significant yield losses. Nevertheless, only 10% of the nematode universe is parasites causing damages to plants; 25% are free-living forms including bacterivorous, fungivorous, omnivorous or predators according to their feeding habits. The relationship between the nematode population level and the damage level for each crop is unknown. Therefore, pesticides are considered the best control option for farmers, but the indiscriminate use could lead to the instability of soil communities resulting in environmental risk. For the risk evaluation, originated from chemical substances, impacts on different types of soil management, as well as disturbances suffered by the soil, several toxicity tests with nematodes have been carried out and there is an increased demand in their use in highly developed countries. The analysis of the soil nematode communities in some ecosystems, according to their feeding habits and maturity index proved to be a good indicator to the damages caused by pollutants or ecolo...
