ABSTRACT: Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) is a high economic potential Meliaceae found in an upland forest of the Brazilian Amazon, one of the most exploited species in Brazil and because of that is endangered. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of sowing position and presence of endocarp in the emergence and initial growth of S. macrophylla seedlings. The design was completely randomized with four replications of 25 seeds, arranged in a factorial 3 × 2 (positions and endocarp
OVERCOMING DORMANCY IN SEEDS OF Tachigali myrmecophila (Ducke)Ducke ABSTRACT Aimed to evaluate different methods of overcoming seed dormancy to enhance the spread of Tachigali myrmecophila (Ducke) Ducke. Five treatments were performed: control -making themselves only asepsis of seeds by soaking in sodium hypochlorite (2%) for five minutes; chiseling -asepsis of seeds by soaking in sodium hypochlorite (2%) for five minutes and seed surface abrasion sandpaper No. 80 on the side opposite to the micropyle seeds, to avoid damage to the embryo; immersion in sulfuric acid (98% pa) for 10 or 20 minutes and immersion in water -asepsis of seeds by soaking in sodium hypochlorite (2%) for 5 minutes and immersion in water for 24
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of application of nitrogen sources and doses in the biochemical response of seedlings of Tachigali vulgaris L. G. Silva & H. C. Lima. The seedlings were grown in pots containing 3 dm 3 of soil. Nitrogen sources such as urea [(NH₂)₂CO], ammonium nitrate (NH 4 NO 3 ), ammonium sulfate [(NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 ] and calcium nitrate [Ca (NO 3 ) 2 ] were tested in five doses of 0, 75, 150, 225 and 300 mg dm -³. They were applied as a solution in four portions, 25, 50, 75 and 100 days after transplanting. The experimental unit consisted of a vase and a randomized block design (RBD) in factorial scheme (4 × 5), corresponding to 4 sources and 5 doses, with four replications, totally 80 vessels. The biochemical analyzes were performed at the end of the experiment and nitrate levels, nitrate reductase enzyme activity, free ammonium, total soluble amino acids, total soluble proteins, carbohydrates, sucrose and chlorophylls were determined. There was a reduction in the concentration of protein in leaf and root, with the application of ammonium nitrate and calcium nitrate. The conversion of nitrate into the root in amino acids shown to be dependent to the oxidation of carbohydrates, causing the reduction of the concentration of this solute increases with the supply NO 3 -. The results showed that for production of Tachigali vulgaris seedlings the dose of 150 mg dm -3 of N, applied in a piecemeal manner, at 25, 50, 75 and 100 days of transplanting with the ammonium nitrate fertilizer can be recommended.
Studies dealing with the behavior, initial development, uptake and nutrient use efficiency of native Amazonian trees as a function of fertilization are extremely important to support actions for the recovery and management of degraded areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of fertilization with different levels of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) on growth and nutrient use efficiency in Tachigali vulgaris plantation. The experiment was installed in a tropical climate region in eastern Amazonia, Brazil. Three doses of P (0, 65.22 and 130.4 kg ha-1) and three doses of K (0, 100 and 200 kg ha-1) were applied in a 3 x 3 factorial scheme and randomized block design, with 4 repetitions. Growth parameters, nutrient concentration in biomass, nutrient use efficiency (NUE), and biological use coefficient (BUC) were evaluated. T. vulgaris responded significantly to fertilization with P and K in the parameters evaluated. It produced two times more biomass at the age of three years. Fertilization with 65.22 kg ha-1 of triple superphosphate and 200 kg ha-1 of potassium chloride was efficient to increase height growth by 11.1% considering the 24 months of evaluation, compared to unfertilized plants. Mg is the most efficiently utilized nutrient in the biomass components of T. vulgaris, followed by P, S, K, Ca and N. The woody compartments of T. vulgaris showed the highest BUC values, which is highly desirable and of great interest for forestry
