INTRODUÇÃONa industria de artigos esportivos que tenham nos laminados de madeira sua maté-ria-prima como, por exemplo, raquetes de tênis de campo e barcos de regatas, a especialização dos equipamentos e mão-de-obra, similar ã exigida nas indústrias moveleiras, se torna mais crítica na seleção da espécie made ire ira usada na produção. Para os barcos de regatas, as indústrias usam quase que exclusivamente o Cedro (Cedrella odorata).No caso das raquetes de tênis, um tradicional produtor nacional empregava apenas uma espécie, o Jacarandâ (Oalbergia nigra) para a montagem da estrutura das peças. Uma subsidiária de uma empresa multinacional, recentemente instalada em Manaus, no meio da floresta amazônica, importa todas as lâminas de madeira usadas na fabricação de raquetes de tênis de campo. Estes fatos acontecem devido ao nosso completo desconhecimento de ou_ tras espécies que possuam características físico-mecânicas adequadas aos esforços solicítantes a que esses produtos estão sujeitos quando em uso. Atualmente, mesmo que as ?n dústrias de raquetes estejam substituindo as lâminas de madeira por alumínioe compostos de grafite como matéria-prima, elas ainda suprem um grande mercado consumidor com raque tes de madei ra.
Procurou-se desenvolver um móvel que sustentasse o estudo em pauta, apresentando um objeto de uso diário, uma cadeira, que pudesse dè imediato ter o seu desempenho avaliado, ou seja, o fato de ser construído com laminados e compensados pudesse fornecer elementos de confronto com peças semelhantes de madeira maciça do ambiente cotidiano. A idéia fundamental do desenho foi aproveitar as características de estabilidade, rigidez e resistência dos laminados e compensados, para reduzir o número de peças e juntas de fi xação e assim proporcionar uma elevada rigidez em toda a estrutura.

RESUMO INTRODUÇÃOCom o desenvolvimento tecnológico da indústria de adesivos sintéticos e, de um modo geral, de equipamentos eletro-mecãnicos, o uso da madeira reconstituída na forma de laminados e compensados se expandiu em todos os ramos da indústria madeireira, inclusive a movei eira e artigos esportivos. Pela facilidade de trabalhar com lâminas de madeira de espessura reduzida e pela própria escassez das espécies mais aptas ao cur vamento de madeira maciça, desenvolveu-se principalmente nos paTses nórdicos unia linha elegante de móveis incorporando peças laminadas curvas.Como no curvamento de madeira maciça os processos de produção de 1aminados curvos requerem mão-de-obra e equipamento especializados para se alcançar uma razoável produtj_ vidade Industrial. Isto, em grande parte dificulta a introdução do desenho de móveis com peças curvas em um esquema de produção de móveis tradicionais e de linhas retas. Como conseqüência, muitas indústrias moveleiras da Europa e Estados Unidos montam seções de produção exclusivas ã manufatura desse tipo de produto. No Brasil, há indústrias que utilizam extensivamente compensados curvos e uma ou duas raras espécies que servem para o curvamento de madeira maciça. A produção de móveis com peças curvadas se faz praticamente de forma artesanal utilizando-se processos manuais detalhados com cipós, cana-daíndia e patan.(*) Projeto Financiado pela Fipeq/Banco do Brasil.

A enorme variedade de aplicações da madeira cursada, sob a forma de peças maciças, laminados ou compensados, pode ser visto nas indús-trias de móveis, artigos esportivos, objetos decorativos, tanoaria, embarcações ou νigas laminadas. Estas peças estruturais não são comuns no Brasil mas podem ser faciImente en contradas na Europa e nos Estados Unidos. Em todas as formas, a utilização de peças cur vas é determinada por razoes estéticas e/ou de ordem técnica como, por exemplo, as propriedades de resistência e rigidez de estruturas seja em um simples móvel ou seja em uma sofisticada embarcação.Ε natural que a escolha da matéria-prima e do método de obtenção de peças curvas se baseie em fatores econômicos e têcniCOS relacionados ãO tipo de produto fina! deseja do. Peças de grandes curvaturas para serem usadas, por exemplo, em vigas laminadas ou na manufatura de barris, não requerem equipamentos e tratamentos sof i st i cados para sua pro duçao.
