Já era hora. Com o desmoronamento do stalinismo no leste europeu e do ateísmo de Estado nos países sufocados pelo seu domínio, muita coisa mudou no mundo. Hoje, a burguesia protestante, a plutocracia judaica, os sheiks do petróleo, as oligarquias católicas da América Latina e o alto clero do Vaticano respiram mais aliviados, além de sorrirem triunfantes, afinal, o comunismo ateu como projeto histórico não assusta mais ninguém. Todavia, se por um lado o comunismo parece inofensivo na atual conjuntura histórica, por outro, o ateísmo, agora não mais um monopólio do marxismo, continua incomodando muita gente. Dentre os incomodados seguramente não está mais o capital. Ocorre que os autores ateus resolveram -ou conseguiram -finalmente sair dos guetos nos quais estiveram por muito tempo confinados. Dissociado da foice e do martelo, o ateísmo desponta nesta primeira década de século como uma mercadoria promissora para o megamercado editorial, o qual decidiu apostar alto nessa novidade de consumo para o grande público.Mas nem tudo neste planeta globalizado parece ser business. A reação ao despertar dos autores ateus via mídia foi imediata e implacável. Carolas de todas as estirpes e meios, das faculdades de teologia aos cadernos de cultura e às revistas semanais, entraram em histeria, colocando a fé religiosa mais uma vez como vítima de perseguição. As luzes do Iluminismo francês consagradas por certa história da filosofia foram indubitavelmente as masculinas. As presenças de Voltaire, Rousseau e Diderot nas pesquisas e nas obras sobre o período são quase absolutas. A finalidade deste artigo é explorar as Luzes francesas, particularmente, a questão ética da felicidade, pelo olhar de uma razão tão ilustrada quanto a de Voltaire, Rousseau ou Diderot, porém de saiotes e espartilho: o pensamento de Émilie du Châtelet (1706-1749). Pouco conhecida pelo público brasileiro e menos estudada ainda pelos dix-huitièmistes locais, Madame du Châtelet, marquesa de berço, escreveu, por volta de 1746, um Discurso sobre a felicidade. O exame de algumas das teses e propostas éticas contidas nesse opúsculo é uma oportunidade instigante para se entenderem um pouco melhor não só as Luzes francesas, mas, sobretudo, a sensibilidade e as angústias das mulheres de vanguarda da França pré-revolucionária.

Partindo da premissa ontológica de que a realidade é única e essencialmente matéria e que o ser humano é tão-somente corpo, o filósofo francês Denis Diderot (1713-1784) desenvolveu, sobretudo no decorrer da sua maturidade filosófica, uma ética hedonista, baseada na moderação dos prazeres e na preocupação com a utilidade pública. Simultaneamente eudemonista, essa perspectiva materialista entende a felicidade como um estado psicofisiológico, mais precisamente como uma necessidade orgânica que depende da saúde do corpo que constitui e que consiste no próprio indivíduo. É quando, na sua Continuação da conversa, de 1769, Diderot se faz médico e, de forma inusitada, provoca uma reflexão de alcance ético sobre a masturbação. É desta reflexão filosoficamente heterodoxa e dos seus desdobramentos éticos que trata este artigo.
