This study evaluated the effect of dentin pretreatment with the polyphenols quercetin and resveratrol on the resin-dentin microtensile bonding strength (μTBS) and collagen fibrils stability of the adhesive interface. Different concentrations (100, 250, 500, or 1,000 μg ml ) of quercetin or resveratrol, or a mixture of quercetin and resveratrol (3:1, 1:1, 1:3; vol:vol), as well as distilled water or 2% chlorhexidine digluconate, were applied to etched dentin. Then, a two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive was applied followed by composite restoration. Measurements of resin-dentin μTBS were made after 1 and 120 d. The stability of collagen fibrils in the hybrid layer was evaluated using transmission electron microscopy. The Student's t-test and two-way factorial anova with Tukey's test were used to analyze the effects of dentin pretreatment and storage time on μTBS values. Comparisons between μTBS measurements made on 1 and 120 d showed that resveratrol had the best performance, with significantly higher μTBS values after 120 d for all concentrations of resveratrol tested. Quercetin pretreatment resulted in a significant rise of μTBS when used at concentrations of 100 and 500 μg ml . Quercetin + resveratrol at the ratio of 1:1 performed better than when used at ratios of either 3:1 or 1:3. Resveratrol might represent a potential approach to achieve desirable bonding stability and reduce the frequent replacement of composite restorations.
Planejamento familiar na perspectiva do desenvolvimento Family planning under the view of developmentResumo O presente ensaio tem como objetivo analisar criticamente as limitações atuais do planejamento familiar aplicado na saúde pública e propor mudanças considerando o modelo das ciências sociais aplicadas à saúde e a perspectiva do desenvolvimento familiar. A proposta deste trabalho surgiu do elevado número de mulheres que solicitara o auxílio maternidade na região do Recôncavo da Bahia no ano de 2006. Através da aná-lise das variáveis e dos métodos envolvidos no planejamento familiar, foi possível verificar as seguintes falhas: responsabilidade e participação exclusiva das mulheres, foco no indivíduo, o número de filhos como principal meta do planejamento, modelo biológico, desconsideração dos aspectos socioculturais. Neste ensaio, apresentamos a proposta de planejamento familiar na perspectiva do desenvolvimento, que será testada como modelo de intervenção em um estudo futuro. Background. To compare Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) findings for a large Brazilian general population sample with those for US children considering: (a) mean problem item ratings; (b) fit of the US-derived CBCL 8-syndrome model; (c) scale internal consistency measured by Cronbach's alphas; (d) effects of society, age, gender on CBCL problem scores; and (e) ability to discriminate referred from non-referred children. Methods. Parents of 1228 non-referred 6-to-11-year-olds from three different regions of Brazil and 247 referred 6-to-11-year-olds from one clinic rated their children's behavioural and emotional problems using the CBCL/6-18. Results. Results for mean item ratings and scale internal consistencies were very similar to those found in the US and in Uruguay. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that Brazilian data showed the best fit to the US 8-syndrome model of all countries studied to date. Gender patterns were comparable to those reported in other societies, but mean problem scores for non-referred Brazilian children were higher than those for US children. Therefore, the CBCL discriminated less well between non-referred and referred children in Brazil than in the US. Conclusions. Overall, our findings replicated those reported in international comparisons of CBCL scores for 31 societies, thereby providing support for the multicultural robustness of the CBCL in Brazil.
Objective The present study's objective was to investigate the pandemic's impact on mental health and identify variables that can increase or decrease the chances of stress, anxiety, and depression, in both a sample with and one without self-reported mental health issues, in a Brazilian population. Design a cross-sectional quantitative study. Data were collected online in May and June of 2020. Participated 1130 adults between 18–78 years old (mean = 37.46 years, SD = 12.18), from 20 Brazilian states, with an average of 58.61 days (SD = 23.2) of social distancing. Main Outcome Measures Depression, anxiety and stress symptoms, characterization of social distancing, and Coping strategies. Results A significantly higher prevalence of severe depression was found in those who practiced social distancing. Multinomial logistic regressions identified the explanatory model with risk and protection variables to mental health. For the group without a previous mental health diagnosis, using confrontation ( OR = 1.39, CI95% 1.23–1.58) and escape strategies ( OR = 1.48, CI95% 1.19–1.84) increases the odds of presenting severe depression, while positive reappraisal ( OR = 0.85, IC95% 0.78–0.93) and problem-solving ( OR = 0.75, CI95% 0.63-–0.88) were protective factors. In the group with mental disorders, using confrontation ( OR = 1.33, CI95% 1.10–1.60) and escape strategies ( OR = 1.49, CI95% 1.12–1.98) were also risk factors for severe depression and no coping protective factors were found. Conclusions Problem-solving and positive reappraisal were protective strategies that potentially reduced the odds of presenting depression and anxiety, but only in people without a previous mental health diagnosis. Public policies must offer psychological support to the most vulnerable, as well as orientation based on scientific evidence, aiming at improving quality of life.
SUMMARY Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of two nonthermal atmospheric plasma (NTAP) application times and two storage times on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) to dentin. The influence of NTAP on the mechanical properties of the dentin-resin interface was studied by analyzing nanohardness (NH) and Young's modulus (YM). Water contact angles of pretreated dentin and hydroxyapatite blocks were also measured to assess possible alterations in the surface hydrophilicity upon NTAP. Methods and Materials: Forty-eight human molars were used in a split-tooth design (n=8). Midcoronal exposed dentin was flattened by a 600-grit SiC paper. One-half of each dentin surface received phosphoric acid conditioning, while the other half was covered with a metallic barrier and remained unetched. Afterward, NTAP was applied on the entire dentin surface (etched or not) for 10 or 30 seconds. The control groups did not receive NTAP treatment. Scotchbond Universal (SBU; 3M ESPE) and a resin-based composite were applied to dentin following the manufacturer's instructions. After 24 hours of water storage at 37°C, the specimens were sectioned perpendicular to the interface to obtain approximately six specimens or bonded beams (approximately 0.9 mm2 in cross-sectional area) representing the etch-and-rinse (ER) approach and another six specimens representing the self-etch (SE) approach. Half of the μTBS specimens were immediately loaded until failure, while the other half were first stored in deionized water for two years. Three other bonded teeth were selected from each group (n=3) for NH and YM evaluation. Water contact-angle analysis was conducted using a CAM200 (KSV Nima) goniometer. Droplet images of dentin and hydroxyapatite surfaces with or without 10 or 30 seconds of plasma treatment were captured at different water-deposition times (5 to 55 seconds). Results: Two-way analysis of variance revealed significant differences in μTBS of SBU to dentin after two years of water storage in the SE approach, without differences among treatments. After two years of water aging, the ER control and ER NTAP 10-second groups showed lower μTBS means compared with the ER NTAP 30-second treated group. Nonthermal atmospheric plasma resulted in higher NH and YM for the hybrid layer. The influence of plasma treatment in hydrophilicity was more evident in the hydroxyapatite samples. Dentin hydrophilicity increased slightly after 10 seconds of NTAP, but the difference was higher when the plasma was used for 30 seconds. Conclusions: Dentin NTAP treatment for 30 seconds contributed to higher μTBS after two years of water storage in the ER approach, while no difference was observed among treatments in the SE evaluation. This result might be correlated to the increase in nanohardness and Young's modulus of the hybrid layer and to better adhesive infiltration, since dentin hydrophilicity was also improved. Although some effects were observed using NTAP for 10 seconds, the results suggest that 30 seconds is the most indicated treatment time.
