RESUMO O artigo reconstituiu marcos fundamentais da urbanização brasileira, com o objetivo de argumentar pela necessidade de construção social de um projeto para as cidades do Brasil capaz não apenas de trazer formulações intelectuais progressistas, mas também, sobretudo, de convergir forças sociais em torno de uma agenda que vise à consecução de cidades mais justas em termos socioespaciais, ambientalmente sustentáveis, economicamente dinâmicas e culturalmente plurais. Para tanto, em um primeiro momento, tratam-se aspectos estruturais da urbanização brasileira ao longo do século XX, bem como salientam-se experiências virtuosas de governos locais no fim dos anos 1980 e 1990. Em seguida, analisam-se contradições engendradas nos anos 2000 e, por fim, elencam-se algumas das primeiras propostas minimamente consensuadas até aqui.
A década 2010 é atravessada por inquietações que estremecem o solo de grandes cidades da Tunísia à Islândia, do Egito à Espanha, dos EUA ao Brasil, da Índia à França. Os levantes irromperam a partir de eventos situados, por causas contextuais, muitos imprevisíveis até então, mas a crise deflagrada pelo colapso financeiro em 2007-2008, cujas medidas de estabilização econômica levaram ônus sociais para todos os cantos da aldeia global, certamente aproximou tais fenômenos. Outro tópico menos trabalhado, mas não desapercebido, diz respeito a aspectos urbanos dessas insurgências, que Paolo Gerbaudo entende por "movimento das praças" e David Harvey denomina "Cidades Rebeldes". No Brasil, estes ânimos insurgentes se estenderam até a segunda metade dos anos 2010. Tendo a cidade de São Paulo como recorte, este trabalho retorna ao início dos anos 2000 para compreender o período marcado por intensa modernização e reprodução das relações sociais, mas também pela entrada em cena de atores sociais que tem o espaço urbano não apenas como pauta, mas também o disputam e se reapropriam de suas infraestruturas e centralidade. Subsidiados por contribuições sobretudo do filósofo e sociólogo Henri Lefebvre, defendemos a tese de que, se quisermos dar respostas à altura desses bloqueios e possibilidades, é necessário formular uma teoria social sensível às contradições do espaço urbano.

É relativamente aceito, entre diversos autores, que os trabalhos teóricos de Rem Koolhaas tratam de problemáticas importantes para a Arquitetura e para as grandes cidades, embora seu posicionamento seja bastante controverso. Sem tentar resolver as disputas a respeito da atual postura do arquiteto holandês, este artigo volta aos primeiros textos de Koolhaas, com o objetivo de identificar, no discurso ambivalente sobre a modernidade de Nova York, problemáticas relevantes para a teoria arquitetônica do último quartel do século 20. Em minha chave de leitura, isto implica ter em conta a seguinte questão: de que modo essa narrativa, ora estetizante, ora crítica, é capaz ou não de elucidar traços da cultura urbana das metrópoles sob regime de modernização ultraliberal. O percurso é dividido em dois momentos. No primeiro, analiso os textos de Koolhaas sobre o tema, salientando os seguintes pontos: i) a retícula urbana, como especulação em duplo sentido; ii) o arranha-céu nova-iorquino entendido em seus diversos aspectos: como cidades dentro da cidade, como extrusão das forças contraditórias da metrópole; iii) o Rockefeller Center, enquanto experiência arquitetônica coletiva e maior realização do urbanismo novaiorquino; por fim, elucido a posição ambivalente de Koolhaas diante dos eventos narrados. No segundo momento, analiso as perspectivas de Hal Foster e de Fredric Jameson acerca da posição de Koolhaas, destacando pontos que os autores consideram contribuições do arquiteto holandês.
