Hemichorea-hemiballism secondary to basal ganglia hemorrhage in complicated diabetes mellitus: report of two casesABSTRACT -Two cases of acute onset hemichorea-hemiballism in female patients with complicated diabetes mellitus are described. Computerized tomography showed diffuse basal ganglia hemorrhage contralateral to the abnormal movements. Occurrence of such a presentation in a teenager with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is unique. The relationships between non-ketotic hyperglycemia, structural damage in the basal ganglia and movement disorders are reviewed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
