This paper reports the preparation process of an electrochemical cell consisting of metallic lithium, lithium titanate, and ionic liquid on a MEMS chip surface. Firstly, the MEMS chip is described and the connectivity test of the used pads is performed using voltage contrast imaging. Then the process of electrode preparation using the FIB-SEM technique is described in detail. Special attention is paid to lithium, its degradation during transport into the SEM chamber, and the behavior during ion beam cutting. Finally, a complete battery system was built. It was possible to measure charging/discharging of the model battery system, nevertheless, the functionality was affected by the redeposition of conductive materials on the MEMS surface and charging by an electron beam.
This paper describes the construction of a hermetically insulated cell for post-mortem research of electrode materials of electrochemical power sources. The first part specifies the problems of XRD characterization, followed by a description of the cell solving problems with hermetic insulation and distortion of diffraction patterns. Then, a positioning system for sample displacement error correction is described and tested on the example of the Al2O3 powder standard. Finally, the measurement procedure using the constructed device on the example of a graphite electrode of the Li-ion cell is demonstrated.
X-ray computed tomography is a 3D imaging technique that is able to provide information about both inner and outer parts of battery cells without their destruction. We will present this technique allowing us access to the batteries data in the whole range of scales – from the analysis of entire cells down to microstructure of electrodes. We will focus on the changes in the structure during the battery's aging process and the manufacturing defects.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
