A method has been developed for normalized spectrophotometric analyses of multicomponent mixtures in which only the mutual relationships of absorption coefficients are determined rather than the absolute values. The method is intrinsically rapid and accurate, and has been shown to effect a considerable saving in time and materials relative to older methods. The solubility is such, however, that the maximum concentration attainable at room temperature was 40 mg. per 100 ml. of solution.The results obtained with synthetic mixtures containing known amounts of RDX and HMX are shown in Table I. The grand average of the results obtained on six synthetics, each analyzed in triplicate, was 99.94% recovery with a standard deviation of 0.48%. The RDX and HMX used to prepare the synthetic mixtures were purified by recrystallizing small batches two times from acetone. The melting points were in agreement with the published values.Results obtained on plant manufactured samples are shown in Table II. The method has been very useful in controlling the quality of the manufactured products.
