Os anuros atualmente somam cerca de 6450 espécies, dentre as quais aproximadamente 988 ocorrem no Brasil, sendo este o país que apresenta a maior diversidade de espécies, com 534 espécies endêmicas e é o quarto país com o maior número de espécies ameaçadas. Dados morfológicos e acústicos são complementares à taxonomia e sistemática do grupo e, portanto, nos gera suporte para aumentar nosso conhecimento sobre a biodiversidade. A família Brachycephalidae é uma das quatro do clado terrarana e atualmente subdivide-se em dois gêneros: Brachycephalus e Ischnocnema. O gênero Ischnocnema é composto por cerca de 30 espécies, as quais se distribuem na porção central e sul do Brasil, norte da Argentina e possivelmente no Paraguai e subdividem-se em quatro grupos: o de I. guentheri, de I. lactea, de I. parva e de I. verrucosa. A diagnose dos grupos de Ischnocnema é ainda confusa, com grupos possuindo espécies com características muito variáveis, necessitando uma melhor caracterização morfológica. As vocalizações de espécies deste gênero são pouco conhecidas, com aproximadamente 42% das espécies com cantos de anúncio descritos. Neste projeto avaliamos a posição taxonômica de duas populações de Ischnocnema as quais se localizam 1) na Chapada dos Veadeiros, município de Alto Paraíso de Goiás, Goiás e 2) no Parque Estadual da Serra do Itapetinga, município de Atibaia, São Paulo. Além disso, aumentamos a base de dados acústicos e morfológicos de Ischnocnema penaxavantinho e dados acústicos de I. juipoca para fins comparativos e melhoramos a caracterização de I. penaxavantinho. Nossos resultados indicaram a existência de duas novas espécies as quais precisam ser formalmente descritas.
