A carambola (Averrhoa carambola) é uma fruta típica de regiões de clima quente e úmido, fonte de vitaminas, minerais e outros nutrientes. A fruta também apresenta ácido oxálico (oxalato). Sua ingestão vem sendo associada a complicações graves em pacientes que apresentam insuficiência renal crônica, uma vez que em sua composição, a carambola apresenta uma neurotoxina capaz de provocar alterações neurológicas. O presente é uma revisão da literatura, tendo como objetivo descrever a importância da não ingestão da carambola por pacientes urêmicos.Palavras-chave: carambola, insuficiência renal, neurotoxina, oxalato.
