A epigenética é um campo de pesquisa da área genética na qual é estudado a expressão de genes, não só daqueles que são herdados do pai e da mãe, mas dos que são desencadeados a partir de experiências vindas do bebê no período de gestação, advindas das vivências da mãe e que podem ser expressos e modificar o genoma. Este fato pode ocorrer não só na gestação, mas também devido às experiências de cada ser humano, desde recém-nascido até a fase adulta. Neste contexto, a epigenética veio para quebrar a linha de raciocínio de que o gene é “imutável”, o fator chamado epigenoma, que são “marcas químicas” pode ser alterado de acordo com os fatores externos, como o uso de medicamentos antes e durante a gestação, hormônios do estresse e possíveis traumas que geram transtornos de humor em indivíduos vulneráveis e que podem trazer efeitos hereditários, assim, modulando a regulação e expressão gênica. O impacto de psicopatologias e transtornos de humor materno e ao decorrer da vida permitem que recém-nascidos, estejam psicologicamente vulneráveis aos efeitos desses fatores advindos da mãe durante o desenvolvimento, além de temperamento difícil, e transtornos psiquiátricos são mostrados atualmente com maior frequência entre as gestantes, aumentando o risco de transtornos comportamentais e de saúde mental em períodos futuros na vida de crianças.
